MEMORANDLM FOR: Chief, Support Staff
SUBJECT : Appropriate Office Wearing Apparel for
Female Employees
1. The Executive Officer, IEG has had several inquiries from female
employees whether it would be appropriate for them to wear pant suits to
the office. They have noted that female employees of the Geological
Survey are now wearing them and they have heard that women at Headquarters
are also doing so.
2. I contacted in the Office of the Director of Personnel
and he indicates that the subject has been discussed with the DCI and
Deputy Directors and that there is no objection so long as the attire is
in good taste. There will be no official notice on this subject and each
Directoriate is apparently handling the notification procedure in a
different manner. tells me that the employees of OP/PMCD were
advised in a staffing meeting.
3. suggested that we would probably want to make some type
of verbal announcement from the Office level since individual supervisors
may have varying views. I checked with DDI/Admin, however, and the DDI
does not plan anything to publicize the fact that pant suits are considered
to be appropriate in most situations.
4. It is recommended that this subject be discussed with the front
office and, if they agree, that Mr. Lundahl announce at a staff meeting
that he has no objection to female employees wearing pant suits to the
office on a discretionary basis.
