EXPLORATORY DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY BRANCH
ACTIVITY REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 1964
The evaluation of the laboratory's sensitometry-processing-
densitometry system was completed. A final report is now in pre-
paration and should be completed by the end of March. The investi-
gation pointed out deficiencies in some of the equipment which are
presently being remedied. Using the present equipment, studies
were also carried out, in support of the investigation of optical
change detection, dealing with the sensitometry of photographic
glass plates. These will be completed by the end of March, and will
furnish information necessary to photograph test objects for use in
evaluation of the change detection scheme.
To furnish beam splitters of high quality for use on one of
the lab's projects, a trip was made to Fort Belvoir where metallic-
evaporating equipment was placed at our disposal. Several good
beam splitters were made, in return for which we provided some
assistance in setting up and adjusting some of their vacuum equipment.
The Kodak Model III microdensitometer was repaired and placed
in operation. Approximately one week was spent in ascertaining its
operating characteristics, and in calibrating and adjustment. The
equipment is now ready for the edge trace studies initially
contemplated for it, as well as for any work requiring such precision
analysis.
The Spatial Filtering Image Viewer was received from the Itak
Corporation and has been installed in the clean area. Since the
shipment was only partial, it has not been possible to align, calibrate,
and test the equipment as yet. The manufacturer has been notified.
It is expected that the missing items will be furnished shortly, and
that the equipment will be fully operational by the end of March.

SUBJECT: Activity Report for EDL Branch (Feb. 6).i-)
Two trips, of one man-day each, were made during the month. One
trip was to Data Corporation, Dayton, Ohio and was concerned with
procurement of resolution targets of an advanced nature. The other
was to Ealing Corporation in Cambridge, Mass. It concerned the
precision bench presently installed in the clean area, and a new item
of equipment which Ealing plans to market shortly; a device for
modulation transfer determinations on lenses.
