Due to the current explosive political situation on Cyprus, the Director, NPIC, and representatives of PID and PAG were briefed on the CSD holdings on the island. In addition, research of all repositories for further collateral intelligence back-up continued. Both actions greatly facilitated the working of which the Center received 50X1 during the month. 2. The development of map indexes to reflect "in-house" and outside source availability has resulted in the completed compilation of indexes on the following countries of the Western Hemisphere: Surinam, British Guiana, Colombia, Panama, Chile, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, and Venezuela. These indexes are the result of extensive map research designed to keep abreast of map production and availability, thus avoiding last minute preparation and operational delays involving immediate map support. The entire continent of Africa will be the next major effort in this direction. The Congo has just been completed as well as Cyprus. 3. A liaison has been established with the U. S. Board on Geographic Names, Department of the Interior, by CSD. This arrangement permits NPIC to acquire, on an expeditious basis, the current BGN holdings on any geographic place name (s) of interest. Thus the MCI's IPIR's, target briefs, etc., should eventually reflect the correct place names for which by law the BGN is the authority. Previous confusion on correct place names has arisen because the NIS Gazetteers are used as the authority and these are not always current. Other government intelligence offices have been employing direct contact with the BGN to establish names and their resulting publications such as the TDI, Bombing Encyclopedia, ASSOTW, etc., reflect different place names than those used at NPIC. 4. In an effort to improve the library loan procedures, a study was made of the possibilities of using addressograph equipment. Upon investigation, it appeared that the Charge Plate system which is used in many libraries, is capable of being adapted for use in NPIC's library. The system appears to be feasible and particularly recommends itself because of its low original cost as well as upkeep and its adaptability to either a manual or an automated charging system. An initial evaluation leads CSD to believe that this system would result in faster and more accurate service by reducing the time and paper work now consumed by the Library Staff to control books and documents. 5. The Division continued its active support to the "Milob" (Military Order of Battle) project. CSD supports the project in all phases. In addition a composite military target list is compiled from the NPIC Target Brief List, the DIA Military Installations List, the USAREUR Military Installations List and the Bombing Encyclopedia. The composite list is provided in coordinate sequence. Packets are then selected by degree square which include all pertinent maps and intelligence reports. Additional collateral materials are supplied as required. The intelligence produced is then incorporated into the target brief file. External 1. DIA Production Center, Arlington Hall, was sent NPIC Target Briefs on China, Mongolia, Tibet and Manchuria. The Colonel is the responsible official in the Production Center for Order of Battle and Logistics information on these areas. 3. The Division continues to be active in support of the CBR Task Force of the Scientific Intelligence Committee. The Research Branch is frequently called upon to provide camera data and photo references of various CBR installations by Secretary of the CBR Task Force of the SIC. 50X1 CSD's specialist, attended the July SIC Committee meeting and 50X1 provided collateral support and background data to the 50X1 Chairman and other committee members. 50X1 OX1 4. A background study on all Soviet Static Test Stand Facilities for PAG was prepared for use in the yearly briefing of the "Highland Panel". The briefing emphasized the activity observed at these installations since August 1963. Statistics on test facilities (liquid and suspect solid propel- lant) in the USSR were provided. During the reporting period, operational activity was observed at 23 test stands at 11 of the 21 test facilities. C 1 .......?......,-----. The Collateral Support Division actively participated in project "How Now". Specific collateral information was acquired for one ICBM site, two Nike sites, seven airfields, one nuclear weapons stockpile, one naval base, and one army camp. More general information such as military orders of battle, weapons system studies, alert status operations, and large scale field exercises or special activities were researched to further assist the photo interpreters in providing a more comprehensive evaluation of these installations. The Army engineers were contacted and they provided appro- priate maps and charts of the areas involved. Data Base (2)1. A total of 872 target briefs were reviewed as part of the continued maintenance effort by CSD analysts. New "blips", revisions, or deletions were made as required. 2. A total of 871 COMOR Targets in the KH-4 and KH-7 decks were processed. This includes a total of 183 new or reactivated targets. The overall total of COMOR targets is now 6,316. This is a 3% increase over June figures.
