SUbJEC(: THE MILITARY SITUATION IN CAMBODIA 25X1 Item No.: WH #2 A Khmer Communist flanking attack early on December 5 forced four Cambodian army battalions to abandon positions on the east bank of the Bassac River seven miles southeast of Phnom Penh. Initial reports indicate that government losses were heavy. Government reinforcements have now arrived in the area but the setback places the insurgents. within rocket range of Phnom Penh proper. Most rockets fired at the city in the past few days have fallen short. Elsewhere, government forces have reopened Route 5 between the northwestern provincial capitals of Kompong Chhnang and Pursat.
