"6. The type of armament expended and the distance from friendly
forces at which close air support is normally conducted." (S)
STAG Comment. (TS) The type armament expended in close air support includes
100-lb bombs, 250-lb bombs, 750-lb bombs, napalm, 2.75 rockets, 5in rockets,
CBU-2, CBU-14, and 20mm cannon fire. The COACT files prior to Octo-
ber 1965 did not include CAS actions and the MILREPS do not include a com-
plete breakdown of ordnance expenditure by type mission. However, generally
standard loads are carried for CAS, interdiction and armed recce. Pre-
planned interdiction flights may carry heavier type ordnance loads when
operating independent from CAS. Ground reports indicate CAS operates
within the ground battle area. FACs have directed air strikes on the
enemy engaged in fire fights with friendly forces. There have been
isolated instances of air strikes hitting friendly forces but these have
been rare. In a few instances where friendly forces are entrenched air
strikes against the Viet Cong have been deliberately called into friendly
perimeters.
