POSSIBLE DAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION NEAR
PAI-TAO-CHEN, CHINA
1. A possible high-water dam (Figure 1) was observed in
an initial stage of construction at 29-32-53N 107-29-20E, 47
nautical miles (nm) east of Chung-ching near Pai-tao-chen,
China, on photography of F_ I This is the only
known activity of this type in the area. When complete, the
possible dam could provide electric power to the southern
portion of the Szechwan Basin.
2. Large construction support sites for the possible
dam were observed on both sides of the Wu-chiang (stream).
The main support site, on the east bank, contains approxi-
mately 95 storage or support buildings, 185 probable workers
quarters or local housing, two probable water tanks, and at
least 175 vehicles or pieces of equipment. The western
support site contains approximately 100 buildings, half of
which appear to be for housing and the other half for general
storage and support. At least 25 vehicles or pieces of
equipment were observed in the area of the support sites.
3. A new seven-span highway bridge (Figure 2) was under
construction connecting the eastern and western support sites.
Construction on the piers was complete, but no bridge decking
was observed.
4. A large concrete batch plant is located immediately
north of the new highway bridge with easy access to both
stream banks. A probable narrow-gauge rail line was under
construction connecting the batch plant to the eastern
support area.
5. A large excavation approximately 91 by 15 meters
(300 by 50 feet) was on the east bank a short distance
upstream from the new bridge. This may be the initial
construction of the possible dam.
6. At least two-thirds of the support areas and
approximately 70 tents were observed on photography of
The access road and the probable water
tanks were partially constructed. The area of the batch
plant was not observed because of cloud cover. The bridge
construction and the excavation were not present.
