The largest river crossing exercise ever seen in China was in progress on on a channel of Chang Chiang (Yangtze River) at 32-13-40N 119-44-10E (Figure 1*), in Nan-ching Military Region. 2. Three probable ponton bridge regiments were involved in the training exercise, with the following equipment: 236 TPP/TMP ponton bridge sections; a large, movable, probable center bridging section with pontons attached; at least two probable powerboats; and at least 170 cargo trucks, possibly ponton carriers. 3. Sixteen assembled (end and center) pontons with decking were joined and anchored at a possible crossing point on the north- east side of the river (Figure 2). Fourteen bridging sections, each with four deck-covered end and center sections, were near the southwest side of the river. The remaining sections were on both sides of the channel. The 170 possible ponton carriers were dispersed in several villages and among hills on the southwest side of the river near the exercise area (Figure 3). 4. This training exercise coincides with the annual fall- winter training activity in the Nan-ching Military Region. *Map Reference: SAC.
