MEMORAI 1I TORS Chief, Defensive Systems Divisions, 0 !
ATTENTION:
FROM: Chief, CIA/PID (NPIC)
SUBJECT: FRUITSRT Radar Associated with $M[ Bites in Cuba
RTCB: Requirement OBI/269/62
1. This memorandum is in answer to your requirement dated 16 November 1962
concerning the type of FRUITBBT radar that is associated with the SAM launch sites
now deployed in Cuba.
2. Because of the varience of photo quality of the twenty four known FRUITSET
radars in Cuba, it was not possible'at this time to examine in detail each radar to
note any similarities or differences that might exist. The FRUIT3ET radars that
were observed at sites near Santa Lucia, Senado, and Chaparra are similar and have
been singled out for study in this report because photo quality did permit detail,
analysis and comparison.
3. Although the photo quality and scale of the material used-in this analysis
was good, still it could not overcome acme of the detail concealed in shaded and
"hidden" areas, hence the degree of reliability drops considerably in some ortions
of the attached drawings. Certain areas of the drawings have been ccmpletegibased
on extrapolation. The portions of the FRUITSBT that are in the "dead zone" are as
follow s
a. The front and sides of the horizontal trough
b. Lower half of the vertical trough
a. Detail an the reflector and supporting mechanisms of the parabolic
dish
d. Most of the detail of the carriage and the box or van portion of
the set
4. Methodology ? The line drawings of the radars were prepared through the
use of enlargements supplemented with the aid of stereo-viewing, then the drawings
were submitted to the Technical Intelligence Division (TID) for mensuration.
Points for consideration ? Most of the mensuration equipment that would
normally be used in a job of this nature was not available to the TID personnel
due, to masons beyond their control. As you know NPIC is due to son to a new

location shortly, hence most of the equipment is in the process of being dismantled
and crated. As a result the T.I. analyst had to improvise by using equipment that
is available. Although the T.I. analyst has provided data he feels confident is
correct, nevertheless, the degree of confidence would certainly be increased had
he used acme of the other equipment to further corroborate his findings. Finally
the enclosed drawings were prepared by the assigned P.I. analyst and have not beep
worked on by any graphics analysts at NPIC.
5. This FRUIT8ET radar is similar in many respects to the type "B" FRUIX2 r
This similarity is based on a comparison made with the
encio ea
s iine arawIngs and those included in the Army study (SPIR 254) FRUITSET
Radars prepared'at the U.S. Army Photo Intetpretation Center, Fort Holabird, Md.
