NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION CENTER 2 NIMA/DOD Approved For Release 2001/11/07 : CIA-RDP78TO4751A000200010015-7 Approved For f use 2 ,PP ff : (? ~ 8T 7 ' A000200010015-7 NPIC /B-12/61 SEARCH FOR GUIDED MISSILE ACTIVITY AND ITEMS OF INTELLIGENCE INTEREST ALONG RAILROADS IN: THE UST-KAMENOGORSK TO LENINOGORSK AREA, EAST KAZAKHSTAN, USSR Approximately 324 kilometers of railroads in the Ust-Kamenogorsk 4 ( 9-58N 82-40E) to L,eninogorsk (50-22N 83-32E) area were covered b good quality KEYHOLE photography on Where possible a corn arison was made with photography from which covered approximately five percent of the area. The photography of this area was compared and studied primarily to locate and describe any unidentified, unusual installations that might possibly be related to guided missile activity and also to locate and identify any items of intelligence significance. In the approximately 5., 300-square-nautical-mile area covered by the accompanying photomosaic no unidentified, unusual installations were observed that appeared to bear any relation to the Soviet guided missile program. The following items of intelligence interest were observed. They are numbered to correspond with numbers on the photomosaic. LOCATION 1. ZASHCHITA Railroad yards and shops. 2. UST -KAMENOGORSK Zinc and lead plant (see CIA/PIC/M57/57, Dec 57, TSC). Thermal power plant (see CIA/PIC/M23/5 , Dec 58, TSC) . Oxygen plant 3. ABLAKETKA Hydro power plant, Irtysh GES^ 4. VERKHNE-ULBINSKOYE Large metallurgical plant. Under construction in_ this plant now appears completed. A single track railroad, approximately 40 km long, leads north from Leninogorsk. This rail- road appeared on I ALENT photography. Little apparent change is noted on KEYHOLE photogra 7. GROMOTUKHA RESERVOIR A large dam across the south branch of the Gromotukha river has formed a large reservoir. This dam and reservoir are part of the general plan for hydroelectric power development in the Leninogorsk area reported in Russian open sources. 8. UST-BUKHTARMA Hydro power plant Report- ed to be largest power plant in Kazakh SSR; capacity in excess of 500,000 KWH. 9. BELOGORSKIY Small polymetal, non-ferrous ore concen- tration combine. 10. ZYRYANOVSK Reported mining center. Clouds preclude interpretation.
