(Published and Disseminated by CIA./PIC) SUBJECT : Hexagon SAM Equipment LOCATION: Kapustin Ya,r Vladimirovka Missile Test Center, USSR WAC NO. : 235 BRIEF NO: PIC/JB-1/60 DATE 12 January 19 6 0 LAT. 480 46N LONG. 450 471 E 25X1 D MAP DATA: USAF ATC 0235-9913-100A REMARKS : This brief describes the hexagon SAM (surface-to-air missile) equipment identified within. the troop-training portion of the SAM Facilities at the Kapus- tin Yar-Vladimirovka Missile Test Center. In addition, it gives a count of equipment found, at several completed operational hexagon SAM sites, as well as the total count of hexagon SAM equipment identified to date from aerial photography of the Soviet Bloc. The hexagon.SAM equipment identified at the. SAM Facilities within the Kapustin Yar-Vi.adimirovka Missile Test Center, USSR, consists of Fruit Set guidance radars, missilelaunchers, and miscellaneous vehicles, including vans, trucks, prime movers, and utility vehicles. This, equipment is dispersed among the dry-firing areas, the transloading area, and the marshaling area. The total amount of hexagon SAM equipment (excluding equipment at the R & D area) associated with troop training within the SAM Facilities is approximately as follows: 30 Fruit'Set radars 169 launchers 540 vehicles The above totals are distributed as follows among the three areas mentioned: Dry-Firing Areas 7 (2 possible) Fruit Set radars 21 launchers '"' 1 A !" 49 vehicles RFORDS D eclass Review b NGA / DoD by eip T-O-P S-E-C-R-E-T 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved Folr Release 2005/12/25 : CIA-RDP78TO4751A000300059001-7 T-O-P S-E-C-R-E-T 25X1 Approved For R ease 2005/1 - 7 25X1 PIC /,TB-1 /60 Transloading Area 12 launchers (entrained) 6 vehicles (entrained) 36 vehicles Marshaling Area 23 (approximate) Fruit Set radars 136 (approximate) launchers 449 (approximate) vehicles Elements of approximately 30 hexagon SAM batteries have been identified within the marshaling area. These batteries evidently arrive and depart periodically. This is substantiated by the presence of entrained and detrained equipment in the transloading area, which is directly associated with the mar- shaling area. The scale, obliquity, and shadow distortion of the photography covering the marshaling area preclude an exact count of equipment, resulting in approximate totals for this area. The following pieces of equipment have been identified from aerial photo- graphy at several completed operational hexagon. SA.M sites within the Soviet Bloc. 6 launchers with detachable bogie wheels 6 launcher prime movers 7 missile transporters (trailer plus prime mover) 7 missiles (total capacity of 12, including 6 in hold status) 1 Fruit Set radar 6 guidance vans 3 guidance generator vans 1 guidance support van 1 Spoon. Rest radar 1 Spoon Rest generator trailer 1 IFF radar (probably Score Board) 1 communications van 1 Mercury Grass antenna 3 van-type trailers (possibly maintenance) In the Soviet Bloc, a total of 46 hexagon-type SAM sites, 10 hexagon SA.M support facilities, and 6 antiaircraft garrisons (containing transporters) have been identified from all types of photography to date. The total count of pieces of all hexagon. SAM equipment identified at all these installations together is as follows: Approved For - 2 - -O- S-E-C-R-E-T lease 2005/12/25 : CIA-RDP78T04751A0003000500 1-7 25X1 25X1 -O-P S?-E-C-R-E-T I _j Approved For R ease 2005/1 - 50p01-7 PIC/JB-1/60 24 Fruit Set radars 118 laaan:che rs 1.53 Guideline-,type missiles 316 missile transporters 19.Spoon Rest radars 610 (approximate) vehicles The combined totals for hexagon SA.M equipment located at the SAM Facilities within the Kapustin Ya..r-Vladimirovka Missile Test Center and at the 46 hexagon.SAM sites, 10 SAM support facilities, and 6 antiaircraft garrisons follow. 54 Fruit Set radars 287 launchers 153 Guideline-type missiles 316 missile transporters 19 Spoon Rest radars 1, 150 vehicles T-O-P S-E-C-R-E-T 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For RefIease 2005/12/25 : CIA-RDP78T04751A0003000A0001-7
