Examine the Type III: storage sites at Khorol East, Ostrov Gor.o:ik.hovka., and Severorno.rsk Airfields for any similarity to nuclear weapons storage sites. REMARKS. Each of the Type III (Air-to-Surface-Missile) sites examined in response to the above requiremerr.t consists of two storage areas, one of which is prob- ably used for the storage of missile a.irf:rames and the other probably used, for missile warhead storage. A graphic of the site at: Severomorsk. Airfield is included in this brief. . The probable airframe storage areas conta.i.n similar if not identical, structures, i..~-+.cludixng storage buildings, a checkout buildi:n.g, lousing and administrative buildings , and other support-type structures. Variations occur in the number of storage and housing structures. Similar security mea- sures are apparent at all sites including double fencing and guard towers. T:h.e inner fence is a. boa-rd fence which precludes observation from the airfield. The areas at Ostrov Gorokhovka. and Sever. omorsk. have :hills to the rear whe:re Declass Review by NGA / DoD ViTAL RFCflRflS COPY Approved For Releas6f009L1?/ 9 - 0050024-2 25X1A Approved For ReIedT_QFOAW1 PIC/JB-Z3/60 a.wire fence has been used in place of a board fence. The area at Khorol East is situated on open ground and is completely enclosed by a board fence. There are no revetted or bunkered buildings in these areas. The probable warhead storage areas have general similarities, and as a group appear similar to Soviet conventional high explosive storage. They contain revetted and non-revetted storage buildings, and small earth-covered bunkers. Security around these areas consists of one and probably a second wire fence, with no evidence of board fencing. The airframe storage area at Severomorsk.and the warhead storage areas at Khorol. East and Severomorsk were under construction at the time of photography. No structures at these Type III sites are similar to those found at known Soviet nuclear weapons storage areas. The security around the air- frame storage areas appears greater than around the warhead storage area., particularly with regard to observation into the area. This would indicate that the warhead is a. less sensitive item than the airframe,, which would not be true if nuclear wa.:rheads were being used.
