Bolshoy Dzhezkazgan (47-47N 67-42E), a major copper-ore-processing
center, is 285 miles southwest of Karaganda, on the single-track railroad
(Route 491)* from Zharyk (48-55N 73-OOE) to Baykonur (47-50N 66-05E). As
shown on the accompanying line drawing, the relatively minor rail facilities
include the following: two rail yards, each about 2, 500 feet long and six tracks
wide; a locomotive repair shop, 130 by 80 feet, containing three stalls; two
repair shops, 135 by 65 feet and 65 by 55 feet; a turning wye, effective length
400 feet; two 40-foot-diameter POL tanks; and a passenger station, 75 by 40
feet.
