PAVLOGRAD ARTILLERY RANGE
25X9
Further research since the publication of the initial photographic
intelligence study (CIA PIC/JB-116/60) 1/ of the Pa.vlograd Artillery
Range (48-44N 3F-21E) has revealed additional information.
The area was located on photography and the in-
stallations found were p o eon a mosaic made from this
photography. T e s tea. y was handicapped by the poor quality of the
photography which was haze covered and oblique. The brief cited a ove
described seven areas within the artillery range. Additional information
on each .area, as shown on Figure 1, is given below:
1. Target Range. Further study reveals a control tower behind
the firing lines, shown on Figure 2.
2. Cleared Training Area. A comparison with hotography
shows that this area has been cleared of trees since Artillery em-
placements were to be found in two locations an t ere was one
building on the south side of the area, so it is apparent that military
activity, involving the use of artillery, was going on here in the WW II
period. T - b.aped target slides are clearly visible in front of the
firing line land a. control tower is visible behind the firing line.
3. Headquarters and Housing Area. Only two buildings were
present in this area Since then a large housing development has
been built and a new bridge as been built across the Samara River to
give access to the area. There are approximately 100 houses in this area
and they appear to be both family dwellings and barracks or apartment
houses. It is probable that there are administrative buildings here also.
The houses are mostly along the river bank, and farther back from the
river there is a. group of six large warehouses.
4. Operational. Base. This area is entirely new since The
operational base is divided into two parts, a garrison area which may
comprise both troop billeting and administrative buildings, and .a shop

area where weapons and. vehicles used on the artillery range are parked
and serviced. Only a generalized impression of the shop area can be
gained from the photography. A similar installation, however, is
found on high-qua ity photography of the same mission at Chuguyev 2/
where parked tanks and other equipment can be seen without difficulty.
The similarity of the building layout and adjacent target ranges at these
two sites establishes both as being tank or self-propelled gun firing
ranges.
5. Impact Area. This area consists of a cratered area and what
was thought to be fragmentary portions of grids. Study of the
photography makes it seem more likely that the intersecting lines are
the remnants of survey lines, made either as part.of a general land
survey or as reference lines for artillery calibration,
6. Possible Middle-range Impact Area. This area contained a
small. artillery impact area There were also survey lines here
giving the false impression o a g.ri. on photography.
7. Possible Long-range Impact Area. This area, shown in an
incorrect location in JB 116j60, was not developed in any way
It now has the dim outline of a circular scar approximately 8,0 feet in'
diameter. This circular scar is possibly acircular grid.
In conclusion, it is felt that the Pavlograd Artillery Range is a
standard artillery facility where both training and the calibration of guns
and shells could take place,
I I A collateral source bears out the artillery train-
ng aspects W ere are also collateral sources sug7 estin missile
activity on this range in recent years. 4/ & 5/.
