REQUIREMENT HTA/SI/R76/57: Locate and describe a. Soviet Scientific
Research Center reportedly under construction. along the Ob River
south of Novosibirsk.
REMARKS :
A new Soviet Scientific Research Center reportedly is under con-
struction on the Ob River, south of Novosibirsk, in the vicinity of a new
dam and hydro power station.
August 1957 ptsbtography reveals that a large new earthen dam has
been constructed. across the Ob River, 15 miles south of Novosibirsk. A
large hydro power plant associated with, the dam is still. under construct-
ion. A large canal with a -rn'ajox lock system composed of three locks is
nearing completion on the east side of the river.
Just south of Nizhne Chemskaya, at the western end of the new dam,
a new industrial community is being developed. Twelve blocks of apart-
ment houses and sever4hundred individual modern houses have been. con-
structed inian orderly rectangular pattern. A new rail spur serves. this:
community and several unidentified industrial installations are in early
stages of construction. The reported new scientific research center could
be under: construction in this locality.

Another possible location of the research center, is the vicinity of
the new town of Berdsk, located on the east side of the Ob River, approxi-
mately 20 miles south of Novosibirsk. 'A large lake has formed south of
the. new, darn. This made it necessary to relocate the town of Berdsk,
originally situated on the bank. of the river, Ito a site adjacent to the rail-
road three miles southeast of its original location. Industrial and :'
institutional type buildings are in evidence in the vicinity of this new
community. However, on this oblique photography;none of the build-
ings or groups of buildings can be identified as possible wind tunnels,
laboratories, or buildings typical of a. scientific research center.
