RAILROAD YARDS AND SHOPS
VITEBSK, USSR
I
Vitebsk is located 80 miles northwest of Smolensk and 50 miles
north of Orsha. It is a major classification point at the junction of
rail lines from Riga and Leningrad to points in central and southern
European USSR. '
The Vitebsk railroad yards and shops suffered heavy damage during
World War II. A comparison of with that of World 25X1 D
War II reveal.s the following significant changes in addition to the repair
of war damage: Three warehouses have been removed and one added
in the east freight terminal area. Several warehouses have also been
removed from the former south warehouse and freight terminal area.
As a result of these and other changes, the latter area is now best de-
scribed as a shop and storage area. All three roundhouses have been re-
moved from the Vitebsk railroad yards. Those formerly present in the
central servicing and repair area have been replaced by three sheds and
one machine shop. Each shed has three through tracks. A new passenger
station has been constructed on the site of the former station, but a war-
damaged viaduct immediately to the south of it has not been rebuilt.
Components of the railroad yards and shops at Vitebsk are annotated
on the accompanying photograph.
