REQUIREMENT SI/S/R2/57: An instrumentation station. for mi s siie tracking
may exist on Mys Zhelaniya., Look for '4.oncentration.of e ectronics
radar and/or related communications equipment.
The existence of a guided missile test range in the Arctic Ocean has
long been suspected. It it thought that a rangehead might be located in the
general Murmansk area with, an impact area in the vicinity of Ostrov Vize
(79? 30'N/77? 00'E). Observation stations have been reported on Ostrov
Uyedineniya (77? 281N/82? 28'E), on a ship positioned between Franz Joseph
Land and Novaya Zemlya, and on the tip of Novaya Zemlya.
A meteorological station reportedly for studying movement and dis
tribution of ice for sea traffic is located near the northern tip of Novaya
Zemlya, on Mys' ape Zhelaniya at 76? 52'N/680 30'E. A report including
ground photography of vintage describes the installation buildings and
a windmill used to generate electrical power. Additions to the installation
found on =aerial photography include a landing strip with associated
navigational aids and increased or new communication facilities. Though
the extent of electronic facilities observed at this small installation is not
necessarily any more than could be utilized by a weather station and air-
field, these facilities could also be used in conjunction with the testing .of
guided missiles. However, no pogitive identification of this function is
clearly evident on, available photography. Features of the station are des-
cribed in the following list of annotations aitd identified on the accompanying
map.

KEY TO AXNOTATI?NS
1. Landing strip 3800' x 275' and oriented 900/2700.
2. Possible beacon for ship acid air navigation located on a ridge 1200' N
of the west end of the strip. It consists of a -lattice tower with a
platform at the M level. 25X1 D
25X1 D
3. Radio range facility located 1200' N of the east end of the strip. Four
stick masts 140' high form a. quadrangle 140' square with a. 30' square
build-tag in the center.
4. Rectangular building with a single stick mast .at the NW corner located
3400' NE of the east end of the landing strip. The mast is 30' high.
5. Lattice tower mounted on a small square building located 1.30' SE of
the two 125' high stick masts (item 6). Combined height of the build
ing and tower is 601. The tower has three probable platforms evenly
spaced along its height. The tower is at the approximate location of
a windmill appearing on= ground photography. The tower is the
same height and has the same number of platforms as the windmill.
No.blades are visible or, photography. 25X1 D
6. Radio station with a directional-type antenna located 4000' NE of the
east end of the la:. ding strip. It is composed of two stick mats 125'
high, 265' apart, and oriented 700/2500.. These masts were not found
oxn._g round photography.
7. Tra;asmitter building with a 20' high stick mast at the west corner
located 115' NE of the two 125' high stick masts. A line of short
A les connects this building with the two tall masts.
8. Sir4l.e stick mast 50' high located 2301 south of the possible obser.-
vation tower (item 9).
9. Small rectangular one-story building with an, . enclosed towier on its
roof located 4800' NE of the east end of the landing strip on top of a
-Tall 400' from the shore. Combined height of the building and tower is
