This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the Production Center 1Pla.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a. specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (13) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (F) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (1I) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage/maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

The Vilnius Army Training Area Nemencine
is located approximately 3 kilometers (km)
northeast of Vilnius and 10 km southwest of
Nemencine (Figure 1). The training area covers
over 1,000 acres and is probably utilized by the
unit stationed in the Vilnius Army Barracks
East (BE No~ 10 km south.
The area contains a tank/assault-gun firing
range with 3 runs, apossible ammunition storage
area, a possible bivouac area, and 2 infantry
training areas (Figure 2).
area has been enlarged since that date and
still appears to be under expansion.
The Vilnius-Pabrade rail line passes ap-
proximately 6 km south of this installation.
Road Service
Good secondary roads connect the area with
Vilnius and the military installation.
Administration and Troop Housing Area
Area D is a possible bivouac area in heavy
woods and contains 6 buildings and a rectangular
road.
Ammunition Storage Area
Area F is a possible ammunition storage
area with 6 possible ammunition bunkers, 3
support/storage buildings, 1 administration
building, and probable open storage. The open
storage area is protected on all sides by earth
walls.
Athletic Field
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Range
Area N is a 3,000-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,000-foot lanes and 8
moving targets and a probable static firing line
for firing from fixed positions.
Infantry or Combined Arms Field Training Area
Area R1 is an infantry training area with
a personnel trench system and a row of person-
nel emplacements connected by a trench.
Area R2 is an infantry training area with
personnel trenches and emplacements, an ath-
letic field, and trackage.
Unidentified Facilities or Track Activity
Area T is a large gully containing an un-
identified tower and approximately 15 rectan-
gular objects (possibly tents or tanks/SP guns)
in 2 rows.
Area K is an oval personnel exercise
track.
