This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the Production Center 1Pla.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (F) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (II) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage /maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified

Novocherkassk Maneuver Area Persianovka
Northeast is 12 kilometers (km) northeast of
Novocherkassk and 20 kilometers southwest of
Shakhty. It is adjacent to the main road and
rail line between these 2 towns (Figure 1).
The installation covers approximately 40
square km and contains a driver-training area,
2 tank firing ranges, 2 direct firing range
sectors, a small-arms firing range, and sup-
port facilities. This installation has been re-
ported as a division-sized maneuver area; how-
ever, at present the area is used exclusively
as a firing range with a driver-training area.
The range facilities are probably used by all
troop units in the Novocherkassk-Shakhty area
(Figure 2).

has existed since World War II and apparently
evolved from a troop maneuver area to a firing
range. Changes in seasonal usage cannot be
determined due to a lack of winter coverage.
Railroad Service
The area is adjacent to the main rail line
(double-track) between Novocherkassk and
Shakhty.
Road Service
A first-class all-weather road connects all
range facilities with the first-class hard-sur-
faced road between Novocherkassk and Shakhty.
Numerous unimproved roads and vehicle tracks
are visible within the area.
Aircraft Landing Strips
Novocherkassk Airfield (a sod strip) is
6.4 km south of the firing range. Much of the
airfield area has been returned to agriculture
and the hard-surfaced runway and the hangar/
maintenance area no longer exist.
POL Storage Areas
Several civilian POL storage facilities are
in Novocherkassk.
Other Buildings
Area H contains 2 probable range support
buildings.
Equipment Storage/ Maintenance Area
Area J contains a 500- by 1,000-foot
motor park, a 50- by 150-foot motor vehicle
storage building, and a 35- by 75-foot motor
vehicle maintenance building.
Small-Arms Firing Range
Area L is a small-arms firing range 900 to
1,500 feet long and 2,000 feet wide overall.
The range appears to be divided into 4 sections
of various lengths. The target area is indis-
tinct, but all sections have a common firing
line with a centrally located range control tower
behind the firing line.
Driver-Training Areas
Area Ml is an irregularly shaped, closed-
loop, driver-training area. The area is approx-

facilities or stations evenly spaced around the
course.
Area M2 is a figure-8 driver-training area.
The area contains 2 distinct figure-8's and 4
cleared areas for trailer or gun backing or
parking.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Ranges
Area Ni is a 4,500-foot tank/assault gun
firing range with five 2,750-foot lanes and
approximately 9 moving-target tracks. The
target area is heavily tracked and indistinct.
Two range support buildings are in the area.
Area N2 is a 5,000-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,750-foot lanes and
approximately 6 moving-target tracks. Arange
control building is behind the firing line.
Flat-Trajectory Firing Ranges
Area P1 is a 4,000-foot flat-trajectory
firing range with 10 possible moving-target
runs and 3 range support or target storage
buildings.
Area P2 is a 6,000-foot flat-trajectory
firing range with 2 possible moving-target
tracks. The area appears to be divided into
2 main sections with a common firing line
and range control building.
Artillery Emplacements (Batteries)
Area Q contains field artillery emplace-
ments with an undetermined number of firing
positions. There is extensive trackage and
ground scarring in this area which contains
miscellaneous revetted positions, none of which
can be specifically identified as field artillery
firing positions. The overall length of the range
would easily accommodate artillery firing.
Scarred areas in the northern section appear to
be artillery impact areas.
