This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NP IC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by,the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage/maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-

A large military training area (Gorokhovets

is located 25 kilometers (km) east-northeast
of Gorokhovets (Figure 1).

The training facility covers approximately
182,400 acres and contains seven troop billeting
areas (Figures 2-10).
Area I at 56-16N 043-O1E
Army Barracks,
contains
administration building
and 35 support buildings, 4 vehicle parks with
3 vehicle sheds and 2 support buildings, aprob-
able water reservoir, an unidentified area with
3 buildings, and an athletic field (Figures 2
and 3).
Area II at 56-18N 042-57E contains 3 ad-
ministration buildings, 25 barracks, 71 quarters,
56 storage buildings, 14 probable storage build-
ings, 3 explosives storage buildings, 15 possible
explosives storage buildings, 3 vehicle parks
with 5 possible vehicle sheds, 5 possible equip-
ment sheds, 7 vehicle sheds, 56 support build-
ings, and an athletic field (Figures 4 and 5).
Area III at 56-18N 042-53E consists of a
bivouac area (Figure 10).
Area IV at 56-17N 042-47E contains 3
administration buildings, 7 probable barracks,
26 barracks, 12 quarters, 47 storage buildings,
3 possible semiburied buildings, 3 vehicle
sheds, 33 support buildings, an athletic field,
and a POL area with 13 large and 6 medium
tanks and a large number of possible horizontal
POL tanks (Figures 6 and 7).
Area V at 56-15N 042-49E contains 2 bivouac
areas, 2 administration buildings, 15 barracks,
6 barracks/quarters, 19 quarters, 1 storage
building, 4 vehicle parks with 5 vehicle sheds,
1 vehicle maintenance building, 28 support build-
ings, and 2 athletic fields (Figures 8 and 9).
Area VI at 56-29N 042-38E is a bivouac
area with approximately 8 support buildings.
Area VII at 56-19N 043-OIE contains 1
administration building, 3 barracks, 3 storage
buildings, and a vehicle park with 3 vehicle
sheds, a vehicle maintenance building, and 2
support buildings. This area is probably a
support area for the range area which is located
immediately north (Figure 10).
Also located in the overall area are 4
probable explosives storage areas with a total
of 31 buildings and 2 general storage areas
with a total of 29 storage buildings, 3 probable
and 3 possible storage buildings, and 3 support
buildings.
The training facilities include 7 small-arms
firing ranges, 5 athletic fields, a tracked-vehicle
driver-training area, a probable wheeled-
vehicle driver-training area, 10 tank/assault-
gun firing ranges, 3 areas of artillery training,
a combined-arms field training course, a prob-
able wheeled-vehicle-mounted automatic-weap-
ons firing range,
training facilities (Figure 10).

The area is served by a spur of the Gorkiy-
Korkov rail line. The spur splits into three
parts which serve various components of the
area.
The area is served by secondary roads
which connect with the Gorkiy- Vyazniki highway.
Administration and Troop Housing Areas
Area I (Gorokhovets Army Barracks). Area
D1 is a bivouac area with probable seasonal
use and contains 1 U-shaped administration
building and 35 support buildings.
Area II. Area D2 is a permanent housing
area and contains 1 U-shaped multistory admin-
istration building, 2 multistory barracks, 7
barracks, 15 quarters, and 14 support buildings.
Area D3 contains 1 U-shaped multistory
administration building, 7 multistory barracks,
4 barracks, 56 quarters, and 14 support build-
ings.
Area D4 contains 1 multistory administra-
tion building, 5 barracks, and 5 support buildings.
Area III. Area D5 is a bivouac area located
between Areas II and IV and has probable
seasonal use.
Area IV. Area D6 is a permanent housing
area and contains 1 T-shaped administration
building, 19 barracks, and 9 support buildings.
Area D7 contains 1 U-shaped administration
building, 1 T-shaped administration building, 7
barracks, and 2 support buildings.
Area D8 contains 4 quarters.
Area D9 contains 7 probable barracks and
8 quarters.
Area V. Area D10, a bivouac area with
both seasonal and permanent housing facilities,
contains 15 support buildings.

1 T-shaped administration building, 5 multistory
barracks, 10 barracks, 6 barracks/quarters,

Area D12 is a bivouac area with 2 support
buildings.
Area VI. Area D13, a bivouac area with
approximately 8 support buildings, is a seasonal
housing area
Area VII. Area D14, located immediately
south of Range N4, is probably a support area
for the ranges, and contains 1 administration
building, 3 barracks, and 3 storage buildings.
General Storage Areas
Area El (Figure 10) is possibly secured,
surrounded by a firebreak, and contains 3 moni-
tor-roofed possible storage buildings, 3 probable
storage buildings, and 1 support building.
Area II. Area E2 contains 14 probable stor-
age buildings.
Area E3 contains 45 storage buildings and 3
support buildings.
Area E4 contains 11 storage buildings.
Area IV. Area E5 is rail-served and con-
tains 20 storage buildings.
Area E6 is served by at least 4 rail spurs
and contains 13 storage buildings.
Area E7 is rail-served and contains 13 stor-
age buildings.
Area V. Area E8 is rail-served and con-
tains 1 storage building.
Area VI. Area E9 is singly secured and
contains 29 storage buildings and 2 support
buildings.
Ammunition Storage Areas
Area F1 is doubly secured and contains 12
probable explosives storage buildings.

possible horizontal POL tanks and 6 support
buildings are located throughout the area.

Area I. Area H1 is a probable water reser-
voir.
Area H2 is a secured unidentified area with
3 buildings and heavy scarring.
Area II. Area H3 contains 2 support build-
ings.
Area H4 contains

Area J2 is a 600- by 350-foot vehicle park
with a 360- by 120-foot extension.
Area J3 is a 900- by 360-foot vehicle park
and contains 1 support building.
Area J4 is a 800- by 750-foot vehicle park
and contains 3 vehicle sheds, one measuring 280
by 40 feet, and two measuring 300 by 40 feet,
and 1 support building.
Area II. Area J5 is a singly secured 600-
by 450-foot vehicle park and contains 7 vehicle
sheds, three 240 by 40 feet and four 140 by 30
feet.
Area J6 is a 750- by 360-foot vehicle park.
Area J7 is singly secured and contains 5
possible equipment sheds, four 210 by 50 feet
and one 360 by 50 feet, 5 possible vehicle sheds,
one 240 by 40 feet, two 120 by 30 feet, and two
210 by 30 feet, and 4 support buildings.
Area IV. Area J8 contains 3 vehicle sheds,
two 280 by 40 feet and one 150 by 40 feet, and 1
support building.
Area V. Area J9 is a 740- by 400-foot
vehicle park.
Area J10 contains 2 vehicle sheds each 180
by 40 feet and 1 vehicle maintenance building
150 by 75 feet.
Area J11 contains 3 vehicle sheds, two 300
by 40 feet and one 225 by 40 feet, and 2 support
buildings.
Area J12 is an approximately 400- by 300-
foot vehicle park.
Area VII. Area J13 contains 3 vehicle sheds,
two 160 by 35 feet and one 140 by 35 feet, 1
vehicle maintenance building 90 by 55 feet, and
2 support buildings.
Five athletic fields (K1-K5) are located
throughout the installation. KI is in Area I,
K2 is in Area II, K3 is in Area IV, and K4 and
K5 are in Area V.

Small-Arms Firing Ranges
Seven small-arms firing ranges (L1-L7)
are located in the installation. The dimensions
of L1 are undetermined. L2 is 975 by 195 feet,
L3 is 650 by 420 feet, L4 is 850 by 195 feet, L5
is 975 by 195 feet, L6 is 1,170 by 260 feet, and
L7 is 900 by 650 feet. L1 has 4 support buildings
and L7 has 3 support buildings.
Driver-Training Areas
Area Ml is a tracked-vehicle driver-train-
ing area. Heavy scarring is evident.
Area M2 is a probable wheeled-vehicle
driver-training area. Light scarring is evident.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Ranges
Area Ni is a 2,400-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with five 1,200-foot lanes and 1
moving target run. Light activity is observed.
Area N2 is a 2,100-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with two 1,800-foot lanes and 2
moving target runs. Medium activity is ob-
served.
Area N3 is a 900-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 900-foot lanes. Medium
activity is observed.
Area N4 is a 4,200-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with 3 moving target runs. Heavy
trackage is observed.
Area N5 is a 3,600-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,400-foot lanes and 2
moving target runs. Heavy trackage is ob-
served.
Area N6 is a 3,600-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with 1 moving target run. Heavy
trackage is observed.
Area N7 is a 4,200-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,400-foot lanes and
1 moving target run. Heavy trackage is ob-
served.
Area N8 is a 4,200-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,400-foot lanes and 4

moving target runs. Heavy trackage is ob-
served.
Area N9 is a 6,900-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with 1 moving target run. Heavy
trackage is observed.
Area N10 is a 5,400-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,400-foot lanes and 5
moving target runs. Heavy trackage is ob-
served.
Artillery Emplacements (Batteries)
A large number of 6-gun FA batteries are
located throughout Area Ql. The parallel ground
scars and diamond ground scars are probably
associated with artillery training.
A large number of 4- and 6-gun FA batteries
and heavy vehicular ground scarring are ob-
served throughout Area Q2.
A large number of 4- and 6-gun FA batteries
and medium vehicular scarring are observed
throughout Area Q3.
Combined-Arms Field Training Area
Area R is a combined-arms field training
course with vehicular ground scarring, a water
crossing at either end, artillery emplacements,
and personnel trenching and scarring.
Special Training Facilities
Area Si is a probable wheeled-vehicle-
mounted automatic- weapons firing-range with
4 support buildings, 9 moving target runs, 3
closed-circuit firing loops, and a maximum
firing distance of 2,075 feet.
