This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division
In the interest of uniformity, the titles anct letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage/maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

A probable military barracks is approxi-
mately 8 kilometers (km) south of Karagan
(Figure 1).
The installation is a secured area ap-
proximately 700 by 350 feet, and contains
3 possible barracks, 11 storage/support build-
ings, and a probable vehicle shed. The in-
stallation also contains 1 probable vehicle
park and 1 shed-like structure outside the
secured area. A large unidentified excavation
is approximately 3 km north of the area and
a probable athletic oval is approximately 1,000
feet to the south. A subcaliber automatic
weapons moving-target range is immediately
west (Figures 2 and 3).
=KEYHOLE missions of interpretable
quality covered the installation in
Comparative analy-
sis reveals no apparent change in facilities
and a high level of activity.
The installation is approximately 8 km
south of a. siding of the Krasnovodsk-Ashkhabad
rail line.
An unimproved road connects the installa-
tion to a highway between Gasan-Kuli on the
Caspian Sea, and Ashkhabad.
Aircraft Landing Strips
An estimated 10,000-foot long graded-earth
area which appears to be suitable for aircraft
is approximately 9 km northeast. No aircraft
were observed.
Other Buildings
Several small support sheds are located
throughout the area.
Equipment Storage /Maintenance Area
Area J, a probable vehicle park, 700 by 75
feet, contains 1 small possible vehicle shed.
Area K, approximately 1 km south of the
installation, contains an athletic field.
Flat-Trajectory Firing Range
Area P, immediately west of the instal-
lation, contains a 1,600-foot long flat -trajectory
firing range with 3 moving targets and an
undetermined number of stationary targets.
Approximately 5 small support buildings are
located at the range, which probably functions
as a subcaliber/small -arms combination range.
