This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division..
In the interest of uniformity, the titles anct letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (II) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage /maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firingranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

Birobidzhan Army Barracks is located on
the western edge of Birobidzhan (Figure 1).
The installation covers approximately 1,000
acres and contains 5 administration buildings,
1 probable administration buildings, 1 admin-
istration building/academy, 21 barracks, 5 prob-
able barracks, 16 quarters, 25 storage build-
ings, 3 vehicle sheds, 2 probable vehicle sheds,
4 vehicle maintenance/ storage buildings, 1 ve-
hicle maintenance building, 73 support buildings,
and 1 probable shipping/receiving building.
Other facilities include a motor park, a POL
storage area, a shipping and receiving area,
and a road-to-rail vehicle /equipment access
area. Training facilities include wheeled-and
tracked-vehicle driver-training courses, a
small-arms firing range, an athletic field, apa-
rade ground, and an obstacle course (Figures 2
and 3).
A probable associated training area is lo-
cated 3 kilometers (km) southwest of the bar-
racks area and consists of a possible tracked-
vehicle driver-training area andatank/assault-
gun firing range.

Railroad Service
A single track rail line serves the area.
A 600- by 200-foot unloading area is adjacent
to the rail line inside a secured area (Al).
Track activity indicates this area is active. Four
support buildings and 1 probable shipping/re-
ceiving building are within the secured area.
A 3600- by 65 -foot rail-to-road access area
(A2) is parallel with the rail spur.
All-weather urban streets provide access
to Birobidzhan.
Administration and Troop Housing Areas-
Area D1 appears to be occupied and contains
5 barracks, 16 military dependents quarters, 2
storage buildings, and 1 support building. Sev-
eral small sheds and gardens are in the area.
Area D2 appears to be occupied and contains
3 barracks and 2 support buildings.
Area D3 appears to be occupied and contains
I administration building, 4 barracks, and 1
support building. Several small huts are lo-
cated in the area.
Area D4 appears to be occupied and contains
I probable administration building, 5 probable
barracks, and 4 support buildings. Several
small huts and gardens are in the area.
Area D5 appears to be active and contains
5 barracks and 1 support building. Several small
huts are located in the area.
Area D6 contains 1. administration building
which appears to be occupied.
Area D7 appears to be occupied and contains
1. administration/academy building, 2 admin-
istration buildings, and 11 support buildings.

Area D8 appears to be occupied and contains
1 administration building, 4 barracks, 3 storage
buildings, 2 probable vehicle sheds (260 by 80
feet and 200 by 40 feet) and 6 support buildings.

vehicle maintenance building, 1 support building,

General Storage Areas
Area E 1 is occupied, double secured, has an
area of open storage, and contains 18 storage
buildings and 4 support buildings.
Area E2 appears to be occupied and contains
2 storage buildings and 4 support buildings.
POL Storage Area
Area G contains 25 tanks (two 50 feet in
diameter, seven 25 feet in diameter, and six-
teen
in diameter) and 1 support build-
ing. Construction of the area began during
0
and is nearly complete on the latest cov-
erage. The area will be served by a rail spur
which is not yet complete.
Other Buildings
Area Ill appears to be occupied and con-
tains 7 support buildings.
Area 1-12 appears to be occupied and contains
9 support buildings (3 constructed between
Area H3 contains 5 support buildings.
Five other support buildings are scattered
throughout the installation.
Equipment Storage /Maintenance Area
Area J is occupied and contains 1 motor
park (approximately 1,400 by 1,200 feet), 3 ve-
hicle sheds (one 300 by 60 feet and two 220
by 50 feet), 1 vehicle maintenance building
(280 by 80 feet), 4 vehicle maintenance/stor-
age buildings (400 by 80 feet, 200 by 80 feet,
160 by 80 feet, and 300 by 70 feet), and 6 sup-
port buildings. Vehicles have been observed in
the park on various missions. One vehicle
shed was constructed between
Athletic Field
Area K is an athletic field which appears
to be moderately used.
Small-Arms Firing Range
Area L contains one 450- by 50-foot small-
arms firing range which appears to be mod-
erately used and 2 support buildings.
Driver-Training Areas
Area Ml is a wheeled-vehicle driver-
training area with a probable double figure-
8 course. The course appears to be lightly
used.
Area M2 is a wheeled/tracked-vehicle dri-
ver-training area with an irregular closed-cir-
cuit course. The course appears to be lightly
used.
Area M3 (not on sketch), located 3 km
southwest of the barracks area, is a possible
tracked-vehicle driver-training area.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Range
Area N (not on sketch), located 3 kni
southwest of the barracks area, is a 1,200-
foot tank/assault-gun firing range which was
