This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the Production Center iPla.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (II) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage /maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

Sortavala Army Barracks, a wall-and fence-?
secured installation, is located at the northern
outskirts of Sortavala, on the north shore of Lake
Ladoga (Figure 1).
This installation covers approximately 95
acres and contains 1 adminisrration building, 2
multistory and 13 single-story barracks, 22 gen-
eral warehouses, 1 maintenance structure, 5 ve-
hicle/equipment storage buildings, and 10 mis-
cellaneous utility structures (Figures 2 and 3).

The rail line to Sortavala passes approxi-
mately 0.5 km west of the barracks area.,
The Sortavala-Lakhdenpokhya main road
serves the area.
Aircraft Landing Strip
Sortavala Airfield (a sod landing area) is 2
km northwest.
Administrative and Troop Housing Area
Area D contains 1 multistory, T-shaped, ad-
ministration-type building, 2 multistory, bar.-
racks-type buildings, 13 single-story, barracks-
type buildings, and 7 single-story, general utility
buildings.
General Storage Area
Area E contains 22 storage buildings.
Equipment Storage/Maintenance Area
Area J contains one 280- by 45-foot ve-
hicle/equipment storage building, two 350- by
45-foot vehicle/equipment storage structures,
one 160- by 60-foot vehicle maintenance/storage
building, one 110- by 45-foot vehicle /equipment
storage structure, one 90- by 45-foot vehicle/
equipment storage building, and 3 utility
buildings.
