This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the Production Center IPla.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage/maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing areas or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

the Nikel Army Barracks Akhmalakhti is
iocated on the northwest edge of Lake Kuets-
`(arvi, 3 kilometers (km) east of the Norwegian
border and 8 km north of Nikel (Figure 1).
l'he isolated and partially secured instal-
lation covers approximately 150 acres and con-
tains 2 administration buildings, 5 multistory
barracks, 2 vehicle maintenance/ storage struc-
tures, 7 warehouse 3, 6 multistory quarters, 39
support buildings, and a driver-training course
(Figures 2 and 3).
KEYHOLE misssions of interpretable pho-
tography covered the area to
comparative analysis revealed
continuous activity with little physical change.
the nearest rail facility is located 8 km
south across Lake Kuets-Yarvi at Nike!.
The installation is served by the Salmi-
yarvi-Zapolyarnyy all-weather road.
Aircraft Landing Strip
Salmiyarvi Airfield is 18 km southwest.
Administration and Troop Housing Area
Area D contains 2 administration build-
ings, 5 multistory barracks, 6 multistory quar-
ters, and 17 support buildings.
General Storage Area
Area H contains 7 storage buildings, 2 of
which are in the process of being razed, and
20 support buildings.
Probable.: Ammunition Storage Area
Area F contains 4 probable bunkers or
small huts. This ,robable ammunition storage
area is secured an.i enclosed by a narrow fire-
break. ihere is egetation within as well as
surrounding the sir.::.
Equipment Storage Maintenance Area
Area J contains a 200- by 35-foot vehicle
maintenance/storage building, a 150- by 35-
foot vehicle storeeze building, and 2 support
buildings.
Driver- [raining Area
Area M is a wheeled-vehicle driver- training
;irea with a closed loop course. It is apparently
little used.
