A military training area is located ap-
proximately 15 kilometers (km) northwest of
Mary (Figure 1).
The area contains approximately 15 sup-
port/storage buildings, 22 - 25 range support
buildings, 2 tracked-vehicle driver-training
courses, a flat-trajectory firing range, 2 sub-
caliber firing ranges, 1 tank/assault-gun firing
range with 3 active lanes, and 2 bivouac areas,
1 with tent platforms (Figure 2).
The area has been covered by 1 TALENT
mission and 5 KEYHOLE missions of interpre-
table quality between July 1959 and October
1964. Heavy scarring within the tank/assault-
gun range area indicates that the area is active.
Railroad Service
A major rail line serves Mary.
A secondary road from Mary serves the
area.
Aircraft Landing Strips
The nearest support facility is the Mary
civil airfield, approximately 14 km northeast
of the installation. An emergency landing field
is approximately 40 km southwest of the area.
In addition, 2 military airfields which support
jet fighter aircraft are nearby.
Administration and Troop Housing Areas
Areas Dl and D2 are bivouac areas, 1 with
an undetermined number of tent platforms.
Subcaliber Firing Ranges
Area L1 is a 2,400- by 2,000-foot subcaliber
firing range with 7 moving-target runs at vari-
ous angles from the forward firing points.
Area L2 is a 2,000- by 1,200-foot subcaliber
firing range with 5 moving target runs located
approximately 1,800- to 2,000-feet from the
forward firing points.
Driver-Training Areas
Area Ml, located directly across from the
tank/assault-gun firing range, is a probable
tracked-vehicle driver-training course which
may be used for simulating tank/assault-gun
attacks.
Area M2, located southeast of the tank-
training area, is a probable tracked-vehicle
driver-training course. Heavy scarring indi-
cates the course is in use. Five support
buildings are located just outside the training
area.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Range
Area N, located within the center of the
complex, contains a 12,200-foot tank/assault-
gun firing range with three 2,580-foot lanes
and 8 moving targets and 5 range support
buildings. Heavy scarring indicates that the
range is active.
Flat-Trajectory Firing Range
Area P contains a 6,600-foot probable
flat-trajectory firing range with 6 moving target
runs (4 located approximately 900 feet from the
forward firing points) and 6 range support
buildings. No activity was observed on October
1964 photography.
