PETROVKA SHIPYARD, PETROVKA, USSR
INTRODUCTION
Petrovka Shipyard is located at 43-07N 132-
20E on a small bay along the eastern shore of
Ussuriyskiy Bay, 2.7 nautical miles (nm) south-
west of the village of Petrovka and immediately
northwest of Bolshoy Kamen (Figure 1).
DESCRIPTION
This shipyard (Figure 2) is the delivery and
repair base for nuclear submarines as well as a
repair yard for conventional submarines and sur-
face vessels of the Pacific Ocean Fleet. The yard
was observed in an early stage of construction in
F
(Figure 3) and became operational as a fit-
ting-out and repair yard after Figure 4).
The ultimate extent and con iguration of the
yard cannot be determined in detail due to the
tok BAY
considerable amount of construction currently in
progress .
FACILITIES
Facilities in the shipyard and support areas
(Figure 2) include a ship repair and fitting-out fa-
cility, a shipyard support area, a probable engi-
neering area under construction, an unidentified
processing area, a possible nuclear submarine
special support facility, and housing and storage
areas. The yard is secured by a perimeter wall
with interior walls separating the various yard
areas.
Ship Repair and Fitting-out Facility
The ship repair facility contains a wet dock,
a transverser and 5 lighted repairways. A vessel
size limit of 425 feet length overall (LOA) is im-

posed by the wet dock, although the repairways
are more than 600 feet long. Three portal cranes
serve the repairways. This facility also contains 1
single-bay and 5 multibay monitor-roof fabrica-
tion buildings, 3 of which have overhead steam
service and 1 of which has internal rail facilities.
A steamplant, a thermal powerplant with a trans-
former yard, a light engineering building, a water
tower and several small shop buildings complete
this area.
'1.'he fitting-out facility consists of a mole con-
taining an arched-roof building (wall-secured), a
rail-served pier with 1 portal crane, a rail-served
quay with 1 portal crane, 2 pontoon piers and
several small shops. Security measures in the
fitting-out facility include controlled access to
piers and mole.
Shipyard Support Area
't'his walled area dominates the southern sec-
tor of the bay and is rail served. A coal-fired
steamplant provides overhead steam service to a
large storage building and a large concrete batch
plant. Two crane yards served by 3 gantry cranes
are located behind a quay. Several rail-served
storage buildings are located in this area. Open
storage is scattered throughout the area and fluc-
tuates from moderate to high density at various
seasons of the year. A walled vehicle/ equipment
park with associated maintenance buildings is lo-
cated on the south edge of this support area.
Probable Engineering Area
A new quay under construction will form the
west edge of this area. A multibay fabrication
building and a light engineering building are lo-
cated behind the quay. Two light engineering
buildings occupy a walled area on the southwest
corner of the area. A coal-fired steamplant, 3
POL tanks and 3 administrative buildings com-
prise the remainder of this area. Ample fill area
remains for further construction and a large con-
crete batch plant located immediately north of
the railroad appears to be in operation.
Unidentified Processing Area
This unsecured area consists of a multistory
processing building, approximately 9 small build-
ings and a coal-fired steamplant. An underground
reservoir is located on top of a small knoll to the
northwest with a buried pipeline leading down to
the processing building.
Housing Area
The billeting area consists of 10 single dwell-
ings, 65 multiple dwellings and 57 four-story bar-
racks-type buildings. Two coal-fired steam heating
plants, 3 administration-type buildings, an audi-
torium, a motor pool and numerous small stor-
age/service buildings complete the area. A prob-
able communications site consisting of 1 building,
4 masts, and a probable sleeve antenna is located
on the southeast edge of the housing area.
Storage Areas
The primary storage area consists of 72 small
road-served storage buildings, a steamplant, and
a motor pool. Two secured areas are located near
the northeast extremity of this storage area. The
first, double secured with a fence and a wall,
contains 13 storage buildings and 1 bunkered
storage structure. Four support buildings are lo-
cated outside the security perimeter of this area.
The second secured area is under construction, is
enclosed by a wall and has an interior walled sec-
tion containing 1 administration-type building.
The remaining portion contains 6 probable stor-
age-type buildings and 2 small support buildings.
Possible Nuclear Submarine Special Support
Facility
This facility (Figures 5 and 6), located ap-
proximately 0.7 rim, north-northwest of the ship-
yard on a land fill area, is under construction
and has been identified through its resemblance
to the probable nuclear submarine special sup-
port facility at Severodvinsk Shipyard 402 (BE No
which services the Northern Sea
Fleet. The Petrovka facility is approximately 12
to 15 months behind the Severodvinsk facility in
construction progress. Construction and configu-
