Several new ground target patterns have
beer, identified at the Kapustin Yar/Vladimirovka
Missile Test Center (KY /Viad MTC), USSR
(Figure 1). These targets include a mockup air-
field, linear patterns over an old launch area,
aircraft revetments. a simulated 6-position de-
fensive site, and a large plus-shaped pattern.
All are located north and east of the Akhtu-
binsk/Vladimirovka Airfield and appear to be
part of the Vladimirovka Advanced Weapons
and Research Center (VATVARC). The mock-
up airfield (Figure 2) was constructed in less
than I month. It can be negated on

northwest-southeast, with a parallel taxiway, 2
end-connecting links, and 2 crossover links. A
second runway 4,530 feet long is represented by
outline and is connected by a taxiway to the
other runway. Simulated revetments are located
near both runways and 5 actual revetments, 3
of which are occupied by a small swept-wing
aircraft, are located near the southern parking
apron. A POL storage area is also simulated
through the use of the same light-toned surfac-
ing material used to represent the runways and
taxiways. The mockup airfield is located 6.7
nautical miles (nm) cast of Launch Area 31). the
Luggage launch facility, -I/ and approximately
13.6 nm northeast of the Akhtubinsk/Vladimi-
rovka Airfield at the KY%Vlad \ITC.

Two linear patterns 1,960 by 200 feet and
1,325 by 185 feet, oriented generally east-west,
have been constructed over the launch pads at
Launch Complex G since JI (Figures
3A and 3B). They are located approximately 4
m south of Launch Complex D and 8 mn
north-northeast of Akhtubinsk/\ladimirovka Air-
field. These patterns, appear to be surfaced with
the same material as the mockup airfield. New
craters are present on and near these patterns
and also on and near a circular pattern which
was constructed over a former electronic position
Also constructed between

is an area of activity (Figure 4) approxi-
matelv 3 nm south-southeast of Launch Coin-
piex D and 2 nm northwest of the Launch
Area C. It consists of 3 U-shaped revetments,
I with a small sweet-wing aircraft a probable
simulated defensive site consisting of 6 positions
in a circular pattern, and 2 areas of unidentified
activity. There is also considerable new cratering
in this area.
A new ground target (Figure 5), consisting
of a large phis pattern, has been constructed ap-
proximately 25 nm east of Launch Complex D
and approximately 32 nm east-northeast of Akhtu-
binsk/V'ladimirovka Airfield. This target nearly
bisects an imaginary line connecting the north and
east positions of the large I. instrumentation pattern
and is approximately 1.5 nm southeast of the old
target marker. This target can be negated in
