Because it is the first new L-shaped interferometer found at an ICBM complex in the past 18 months and the only one ever identified at the X site of an SS-9 complex, it may mean that the Soviets are renewing their requirement for L-shaped interferometers. The only other L-shaped interferometer at an X site was one begun earlier at the Olovyannaya SS-11 complex, but never completed. Initial scarring for one of the 400-meter legs of the new interferometer at Aleysk was observed in and the entire "L" is clearly visible in two years after initial deployment of ICBM single silos began, it was clear that the Soviets intended to construct an L-shaped interferometer at the control sites of all SS-9 and some SS-II complexes. However, by early work had abruptly ceased on 14 of those under construction, and seven which had been planned were never actually begun (see IAS Notes of 22 March 1968). The purpose of L-shaped interferometers has never been definitely established, and the operational status of the completed ones cannot be determined from photography.
