Road Construction in Ussuri-Amur River Border Region
The Chinese have been carrying out extensive road construct
ion in
Manchuria near the Soviet border since
KH-4 photogra
phy of
the 25X1
Ussuri and Amur River border region
shows
that they 25X1 D
have built several new two-lane all weather roads and have upgra

ded numerous
tracks and fair-weather roads to all-weather status.
Two-lane all-weather roads now connect several remote points along the
border with the interior of China. They extend westward from the Ussuri
River border to a point just west of Mo-ho on the Amur River border (see
Figure I). As of I there was no construction of roads of this
type in the border area from the point near Mo-ho west to Man-chou-Ii.
These are roads of unusually good construction for this part of China.
The bridges are of concrete, drainage ditches have been installed where needed,
and the roads are well aligned. Long sections of these roads have been built
or improved simultaneously, indicating a high priority. The rate of construc-
tion appears to have been stepped up between

Excavation for a Possible New Space Tracking Antenna Observed at Yevpatoriya
photography reveals an excavation for a possible second large
space tracking antenna at Yevpatoriya South, which is believed to be the
transmitting portion of the Yevpatoriya Deep Space Tracking Facility on the
Black Sea. Yevpatoriya North, the probable receiving portion of the tracking
facility, already contains five large antennas.
Between a large rectangular excavation was dug
about a mile from The existing eight-dish space tracking antenna array at
Yevpatoriya South. The excavation measures about 310 by 210 by 10 feet deep
and its surface dimensions are comparable to those of the hardstand of the
existing antenna. The long axis of the excavation and its location relative
to other facilities and to the Black Sea are such that an antenna located here
would, like the existing antenna, have an unobstructed look-angle for acquisi-
tion of spacecraft to the south and east. When the site was last seen, on
small-scale coverage of excavation work was still under way.
