Identification of Standard Soviet Support Structures
This document is a reference tool for use in recognizing and identifying
various types of standard Soviet support buildings on photography. It is the
second such document produced by IAS. The examples shown are those compiled
since publication of the first document, in February 1969.
Identifications of buildings in four subject categories are included:
housing; schools; social and commercial service buildings; medical centers
and hospitals. In each category, photos, sketches or plans from Soviet
architectural publications are presented along with corresponding examples
as seen on high-resolution photography. All measurements and capacity
figures are from Soviet source material. Two of the items, on pages 17 and
25, provide additional information about facilities shown in the earlier
document.
The examples chosen are mainly those types.of buildings which appear
in support bases at military and other installations of strategic importance
in the USSR. When possible, the examples are those which offer useful scale
factors for mensuration. Our experience has shown some inconsistencies
between the dimensions in Soviet literature for certain buildings and the
measurements of corresponding buildings seen on photography. Therefore,
the dimensions shown in the literature should be verified before being used
as scale factors for deriving other dimensions.
IAS is continuing to assemble reference materials and examples in these
and other categories of Soviet support structures. Suggestions and contri-
butions which might help to extend and supplement this study would be welcomed.
They should be addressed to the Missile Systems Division of AS.
