SUBJECT : Chinese Mership Activity, Southern North Vietnam

1. In response to the referenced requirement, all available photography
since over the Hon Nieu Island Anchorage area and the
Haipho or- area in North Vietnam, and the Peihai Port area and Chan-chiang
Port area in China, were searched for the Chinese merships Hung Chi 149, 150,
153 and 161.

3. Hung Chi-type vessels were observed at both Haiphong Port and Hon
Nieu anchorage since F_ I The Hung Chi 149 (hull type 7) was
identified twice, once a Haiphong and once at Hon Nieu. The Hung Chi
vessels 150, 151, 153 and 161 are all GALATI-class merships (hull type 39).
These four vessels are nearly identical in appearance with only minor
variations causing differences of the sequence of uprights. Interpretability
and scale of the photography precluded specific identification of the GALATI-
class Hung Chi merships by number. These vessels are therefore reported
only as GALATI-class; each such identification could be any of the numbered
Hung Chi of this class.
4. The following is a list of these Chinese mership sightings, their
location,. dates observed, and activity.
a. Haiphong Port Area (20-51N 106-41E):
(1) I I - One Hung chi 149 off-loading
unidentified cargo into three barges.

cargo into two probable SL-1 trawlers.
(5) Two GALATI-class merships off-loading
unidentified cargo into one type 16/17 barge, eight type 46/47
coasters, and one LCM.
(6) - One GALATI-class mership off-loading
unidentified cargo into five barges.
(7) One GALATI-class mership off-loading
unidentified cargo into one probable SL-1 trawler and two type
46/47 coasters.
