NORTH VIETNAM
Extensive Flooding Near Vinh and in Red River Delta
GIANT SCALE photography of shows that recent typhoons and
monsoon rains have caused extensive ooding near Vinh and throughout
the Red River Delta. In the Vinh area, the Song Ca and Song La Giang
have flooded large areas, affecting logistics movement and rail construc-
tion. More than 170 cargo trucks were backed up along Route IA near the
ferry slip on the north bank of the Song Ca. The Song Ca rail ferry slips
under construction near Yen Thai were flooded and the railbed was cut on the
south bank.
In the Red River Delta the main rail lines and highways were service-
able, but damage was heavy to the secondary roads and to the Kep/Hon Gai
meter gauge rail line. The rail bridges over the Song Nhat Duc and the
Song Mio were destroyed and numerous villages in the delta were isolated.
The flood waters have undoubtedly damaged the extensive dike and irrigation
system and will probably delay the planting of the second rice crop. (See
Figure I.)
