KUEI-YANG - KUN-MING RAIL LINE
The KUei-yang - Kun-ming Rail Line, located in southwestern China,
will connect Yunnan Province with China's main railroad network when
completed. This rail line will extend from Kuei-yang (26 35N - 106 ),I-2E)
to Kiln-ming (25 04N - 102 41E) a distance of approximately 300 nautical
miles (Figure 1).
Construction of this rail line was started during 1959 but was stopped
or slowed during 1960-62. photography of
reveals that the rail line is again under active construe ion.
The rail line is now complete for approximately 205 nautical miles and
under active construction for 95 nautical miles (Figure 2).
Because of the ruggedness of the terrain (Figure 7), the unfinished
portion of the rail line will be very difficult and should take considerable
time.
Description of Construction
Completed Sections
The rail line is complete from Kun-ming northeastward for 135 nautical
miles to about 23 nautical miles northeast of Hsuan-wei at 26 32N - 104 19E
(Figure 2). Railroad cars were observed in a railyard at 26 32N - 104 19E
(Figure 3). A spur branching from the main line at 26 02N - 104 06E. is
under construction for approximately 20 nautical miles to a mining area.
The rail line is complete from Kuei-yang southwestward for 70 nautical
miles to 26 15N - 105 35E (Figure 2). Railroad cars were observed in a
railyard at 26 13N - 105 37E.
Sections of Rail Line under Active Construction
The remaining segment of the rail line is under active construction for
approximately 95 nautical miles from 26 32N - 104 19E to 26 15N - 105 35E
(Figure 2). Construction equipment, bridging and ground scarring
indicate intense construction activity along this section (Figures 4, 5 and 6).
