The Ma-an Shan Iron and Steel Plant is located on the east bank of
the Yangtze River approximately 25 nautical miles downstream from the
city of Wu-hu at 31 43N - 118 29E.
This sprawling complex contains two by-products coke oven batteries
and associated by-products section, nine large, eight medium and four
small blast furnaces, three side-blown converter shops, a probable blooming/
slabbing mill with a soaking pit section, and a large rolling mill. The
city of Ma-an Shan is situated between the various components of the iron
and steel plant.
There was significant expansion at this lant from
1wherein a large rolling
mill igure a an c and a third side-blown converter shop (Figure 4b
and Figure 5b) were added. The coke by-products section was also enlarged
during this two year period. From
there has been no apparent change in the facilities.
When observed in he plant was very active with almost
all the blast furnaces in operation. Only the coke ovens and the probable
blooming/slabbing mill were emitting smoke. On the I coverage,
however the rail traffic throw hout the complex was at a moderate level.
