Text, an annotated location map, a table of facilities, and three photos, are included. Forty-one border installations are observed along the western China-USSR border, the majority of which are small border outposts containing from three to ten buildings each (Figure l~. Complete coverage of this area by KH-~+ photography, , shows no major buildup along the border or within the facilities over the past two years. The major concentrations of these installations are near Tacheng, the Dzungarian Gate area, and Chaosu. These installations are in remote areas and, like the border outposts in the USSR, have no standard intervals between them. Most of the facilities are at border crossings such as roads, rivers, and mountain passes. Light to heavy trenching, strbngpoints, observation towers, and walls or security fencing are observed at many of the installations (Figure 2, 3, and ~+~. Access is by either road or trail; in general, no vehicles or equipment are noted. A listing of installations with geographic coordinates and a description of facilities is shown in Table I.
