CHINESE BORDER INSTALLATIONS, WESTERN CHINA-USSR BORDER
This report provides a description of the 41 border outposts observed
along the western China-USSR border. Text, an annotated location map, a table
of facilities, and three photos, are included.
Forty-one border installations are observed along the western China-USSR
border, the majority of which are small border outposts containing from three
to ten buildings each (Figure l~. Complete coverage of this area by KH-~+
photography, , shows no major buildup along the
border or within the facilities over the past two years.
The major concentrations of these installations are near Tacheng, the
Dzungarian Gate area, and Chaosu. These installations are in remote areas and,
like the border outposts in the USSR, have no standard intervals between them.
Most of the facilities are at border crossings such as roads, rivers, and
mountain passes. Light to heavy trenching, strbngpoints, observation towers,
and walls or security fencing are observed at many of the installations
(Figure 2, 3, and ~+~. Access is by either road or trail; in general, no
vehicles or equipment are noted.
A listing of installations with geographic coordinates and a description
of facilities is shown in Table I.
