This report locates the 62 armor installations which have been identified on photography of North Korea since 1962 (Figure 1 and Table 1): This report is based on CHURCHDOOR BLACK SHIELD GIANT SCALE and KEYHOLE photography 125X1 nd contains a location map, a table, two photo- 25X1 graphs, and references. 2. Before 1968, 11 armor installations in North Korea were identified on photography. Ten of the 11 were more than 30 nauti- cal miles (nm) north of the DD~Z; only one was within 20 nm of the DMZ. Since 1968, the number of armor installations along the DI~'IZ within 20 nm o t e DMZ. 3. GIANT SCALE photography over North Korea began and revealed that the North Koreans had begun to update their armor equipment. Before then, the mainstay of North Korean armor had been the Russian T-34 tank and a mixed assortment of assault guns. Since 1969, the number of T-34 tanks and assault guns seen on photography has slowly decreased while the number of the newer T-54 tanks has increased. 4. Forty-four of the 62 armor installations have four revet- ted tunnel-served weapons positions on the front slope of a ridge with connecting tunnel entrances on the reverse slope (Figure 2). These tunnels are concrete linecx, have steel doors,. and provide protection from observation as well as from strikes. Kuhwa-ri Military Area (Figure 3) is representative of the remaining 18 installations which do not have tunnel-served weapons positions. 5. Table 1 includes data on the first identification and the highest and latest counts of armor observed for each of the 62 armor installations.
