1. This report describes increases in antiaircraft artillery
(AAA) activity in Shang-hai municipality between July 1971 and
January 1972. The report includes text, a location map, seven
photographs, two tables containing locations and numbers of guns
observed at AAA sites and storage areas, and references.
2. The largest concentration of AAA ever observed in China

3. Activity was high at AAA sites around Shang-hai (Table 1).
Of 71 sites identified, 68 were occupied by a total of x+79 guns.
Six sites had been constructed since July 1871 and three others had
been expanded (Figure 2). There were extra guns observed at 11 of
the occupied sites (Figure 3). Two new antiaircraft automatic
weapons (AAAW) sites were identified for the first time in Shang-hai
(Figure ~+). Similar AAAW positions were seen at Feng-hsien.
4. A total of 311 AAA pieces were observed in storage and
dispersed throughout the Shang-hai municipality (Table 2). The
largest number of guns was stored at Shang-hai Warehouse Area 1
where 1~+9 guns were identified (Figure 5). The 25X1
previous high count at this area was 19 AAA pieces 25X1

in size from AAAW through heavy AAA, were deployed in configura-
tions which included ~+2 six-gun batteries and 16 eight-gun batteries
(Figures 7 and 8). The remainder of the guns were in four-,

four-/eight-, and nine-gun batteries. Also observed were 725
trucks, 1~+0 pieces of AAA-associated equipment, and approximately
125 tents.
6. This area was first identified on photography
when 125 AAA pieces were observed. The facility contains a
training area consisting of nine training loops with ten firing
positions, a calibration area with three calibration ranges, two
small-arms firing ranges, a bivouac area, and two barracks areas.
