NEW HARDENED DEFENSIVE POSITIONS, CHORWON VALLEY,
NORTH KOREA
1. Four hardened fortifications were newly identified under construction in the Chorwon Valley
in North Korea on photography of July 1973 (Figure 1). Three of the fortifications (items A-C,
Figure 1) appear identical and consist of two connected Y-shaped concrete structures (Figure 2).
The fourth fortification (item D) appears to be a concrete-covered trench system (Figure 3).
2. The Y-shaped structures are being built in the center of the Chorwon Valley at 38-23-30N
127-15-47E (item A), 38-24-OON 127-14-20E (item B), and 38-23-30N 127-13-56E (item C). The
covered trench system is being constructed on the reverse slope of a ridge at 38-20-1ON 127-18-40E.
