FIRST ARMY GROUP
NORTH KOREA
ABSTRACT
1. This report locates and delineates the major army units subordinate to the North Korean
First Army Group. The report is based on all photographic coverage from October 1972 to August
1973: it contains a location map, a photograph, and a table. The report combines point targets into
area targets to provide more meaningful reporting.
2. The North Korean First Army Group protects the security of the eastern sector of the
Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and commands four infantry divisions (one held in reserve) and an infantry
brigade. The units directly subordinate to the First Army Group (excluding the four infantry divisions
and one infantry brigade)'-' include an army group headquarters area, a tank regiment, a rocket
launcher brigade, a motorized infantry regiment, an engineer battalion, a vehicle repair battalion and
a transportation battalion, an AAA battalion, an artillery regiment, miscellaneous infantry barracks
areas, and a storage depot.
3. This report is the sixth in a series" designed to realign the boundaries of the existing
basic encyclopedia (BE) point targets into BE target areas. The rearrangement of the BE boundaries
has been coordinated with DIA and CIA analysts, and appropriate BE action has been taken by
DIA. In the future, the entire First Army Group will be reported under the BE numbers now
assigned to all of the headquarters areas: First Army Group South-Central Infantry
Division Southeast Infantry Division East Infantry Brigade
Southwest Infantry Division and the Central Infantry Division
The area nomenclatures (except for the First Army Group) and boundaries have
been arbitrarily assigned for reporting purposes.
4. Subsequent reports will follow, as time and manpower permit, on all divisions with the
Fifth and the Second Army Groups. Supplemental reports will follow when significant changes are
observed within the reported areas.
5. The First Army Group (Figures 1 and 2). whose mission is to protect the eastern portion
of the DMZ, is one of three army groups subordinate to the Army Command. This area appears
to extend north to 39-08N 127-33E, west to 38-21N 127-33E, and east to the coast of the Sea
of Japan. The adjacent defense sector to the west is occupied by the Fifth Army Group. Table
1 lists those units directly subordinate to the First Army Group, their geographic coordinates, and
associated BE numbers.
