This report locates and delineates the major army units subordinate to the Southwest Infantry Division of the Fifth Army Group, North Korea. The report is based on analysis of photographic coverage from October 1972 to January 1974; it contains a location map, a table, and one photograph. The purpose of this report is to combine point targets into area targets to provide more meaningful reporting. 2. The North Korean Fifth Army Group is responsible for the security of the central sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and commands five infantry divisions (including one held in reserve) and a medium tank regiment. The major elements of a division are three infantry regiments, an artillery regiment, a mortar regiment, a tank company, and a headquarters area. 3. This report, based on analysis of photographic coverage from October 1972 to January 1974, is the third of a seriesl ?2 on divisions within the Fifth Army Group and is designed to realign the, boundaries of the existing Basic Encyclopedia (BE) point targets into BE target areas. The realignment of the BE boundaries has been coordinated with DIA and CIA analysts, and appropriate BE action has been taken by DIA. In the future, the entire Southwest Infantr Division will be reported under the BE number now assigned to the headquarters area The area nomenclature and boundaries have been arbitrarily assigned for reporting purposes. 4. Subsequent reports will follow, as time and manpower permit, on all divisions within the Fifth and Second Army Groups. Supplemental reports will follow when significant changes are observed within the reported areas. 5. The Southwest Infantry Division (Figures 1 and 2), a subordinate of the Fifth Army Group, occupies the southwestern sector of the Fifth Army Group area of responsibility and secures the western side of the Chorwon Valley approaches. The mortar regiment (area D) subordinate to the East Infantry Division, the artillery regiment (area E) subordinate to the North Infantry Division, and an artillery regiment (areas F and F1) subordinate to the Fifth Army Group are also within the Southwest Infantry Division's area of responsibility. The Southwest Infantry Division area is bounded on the east at 38-24N 127-18E, on the west by the Imjin River at 38-11N 126-56E, and to the north at 38-20N 126-53E and 38-30N 126-12E. The adjacent defense sector to the east is occupied by the East and Southeast Infantry Divisions, Fifth Army Group, and the adjacent defense sector to the north is occupied by the West Infantry Division. The sector to the west is occupied by the Second Army Group. The table lists the units and attached units of the Southwest Infantry Division with their geographic coordinates and associated BE numbers. The components of the Southwest Infantry Division are keyed to Figures 1 and 2 and the table. Anhyop Army Barracks and Headquarters Infantry Division and Regiment 6. This division headquarters area and infantry regiment area (area A) consists of one E-shaped headquarters building, four administration buildings, 60 barracks, two auditoriums, seven messhalls, 19 vehicle sheds, numerous quarters and support buildings, and a howitzer battalion consisting of three 4-gun, tunnel-served howitzer batteries. Masan-ni Army Barracks and Headquarters Infantry Division 7. This infantry regiment area (area B) consists of one headquarters building, seven administration buildings, 40 barracks, six messhalls, two auditoriums, nine vehicle sheds, and numerous quarters and support buildings. Yongyon-ni Army Barracks Southeast 9. This mortar regiment area (area D), housed in this army barracks and subordinate to the East Infantry Division, consists of two administration buildings, 18 barracks, one messhall, ten vehicle sheds, three mortar battalions consisting of six 6-position mortar sites, and a flat-trajectory gun battalion consisting of three 4-gun, tunnel-served gun batteries. Sosupo Army Ban-acks and Headquarters Artillery Regiment 10. This artillery regiment area (area E), subordinate to the North Infantry Division, consists of one administration building, 34 barracks, four messhalls, numerous quarters and support buildings, and three howitzer battalions consisting of nine 4-gun, tunnel-served artillery batteries. Changpo-ri Military Barracks and Field Artillery Site 11. This artillery regiment area (areas F and F1), situated in two separate areas and subordinate to the Fifth Army Group, consists of two administration buildings, 20 barracks, three messhalls, numerous quarters and support buildings, and two howitzer battalions in area F consisting of six 4-gun, tunnel-served howitzer batteries. Chimu-dong Army Ban-acks and Headquarters Artillery Regiment 12. This artillery regiment area (area G) consists of one C-shaped headquarters building, one administration building, 31 barracks, 18 vehicle sheds, numerous quarters and support buildings, and three howitzer battalions consisting of nine 4-gun, tunnel-served howitzer batteries. Pulmun-dong Army Barracks and Headquarters Mortar Regiment 13. This mortar regiment area (area H) consists of one headquarters building, one administration building, 27 barracks, three messhalls, eight vehicle sheds, numerous quarters and support buildings, three mortar battalions consisting of six 6-position mortar sites, and a howitzer battalion consisting of three 4-gun, tunnel-served howitzer batteries. Namae-ri Army Barracks and Headquarters Armor Battalion 14.
