NORTH INFANTRY DIVISION,
FIFTH ARMY GROUP, NORTH KOREA
1. This report locates and delineates the major army units subordinate to the North Infantry
Division of the Fifth Army Group, North Korea. The report is based on analysis of photographic
coverage from October 1972 to January 1974; it contains a location map, a table, and one photograph.
The purpose of this report is to combine point targets into area targets to provide more meaningful
reporting.
1, 2. The North Korean Fifth Army Group is responsible for the security of the central sector
of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and commands five infantry divisions (including one held in reserve)
and a medium tank regiment. The major elements of a division are three infantry regiments, an
artillery regiment, a mortar regiment, a tank company, and a headquarters area.
3. This report is the fourth of a series' i3 on divisions within the Fifth Army Group and
is designed to realign the boundaries of the existing Basic Encyclopedia (BE) point targets into BE
target areas. The realignment of the BE boundaries has been coordinated with DIA and CIA analysts,
and appropriate BE action, has been taken by DIA. In the future, the entire North Infantry Division
will be reported under the BE number now assigned to the headquarters area The
area nomenclature and boundaries have been arbitrarily assigned for reporting purposes.
4. Subsequent reports will follow, as time and manpower permit, on all divisions within the
Fifth and Second Army Groups. Supplemental reports will follow when significant changes are observed
within the reported areas.
5. The North Infantry Division (Figures 1 and 2), a subordinate of the Fifth Army Group,
occupies the northernmost sector of the Fifth Army Group area of responsibility. The artillery regiment
subordinate to this division is within the Southwest Infantry Division's area of responsibility and

could not be located and is not included in this report. The North Infantry Division area is bounded
on the east at 38-37N 127-25E, on the west at 38-35N 127-07E, and on the north at 38-50N 127-17E.

East Infantry Division; to the west, the West Infantry Division; and to the north, the 7th Corps.
