SUMMARY OF SA-2 ACTIVITY IN NORTH KOREA
FEBRUARY 1973 - MARCH 1974
1. This report contains information on activity pertaining to SA-2 missile facilities in North
KorO
The report includes text, two location maps, six photographs, and three tables.
2. During the reporting period) I North Korea has
continued to implement a program of expansion of its SA-2 missile force designed to achieve complete
peripheral defensive coverage. Particular emphasis has been in the northern portions of the country.
Significant developments observed on photography between February 1973 and March 1974 were
the identification of eight new occupied SA-2 sites and one new SAM support facility (Figure 1),
11 new alternate SA-2 sites including the first hardened SAM site under construction in North Korea
(Figure 2), and the first observation of dummy SA-2 sites and equipment in the country. By March
1974 the number of occupied SA-2 sites in North Korea had been increased to 42 and SAM support
facilities had been increased to ten (Figure 1 and Table 1).
Occupied SA-2 Sites
3. The eight new occupied SA-2 sites, which have the normal revetted six-position
configuration, have virtually closed previous gaps in the peripheral defense along the southwestern
portion of the Sino-Korean border and along the north-central and northeastern coastal regions of
North Korea (Figures 1 and 3 and Table 1).
4. Of the 42 occupied SA-2 sites, four have been confirmed and 13 have tentatively been
identified as being equipped with the F model FAN SONG radar (Table 1). All occupied SA-2 sites
in North Korea have collocated or associated AAA defenses.
5. Fourteen dummy SA-2 sites with associated dummy equipment were observed in proximity
to known occupied SAM sites. These dummy sites, consisting of three to six launch positions and
ranging from one-fifth to one-half the size of a normal SA-2 site, were 1 to 6 nautical miles (nm)
from occupied sites (Figures 4 and 5 and Table 1).
SAM Support Facilities
6. One new SAM support facility at Kusong was identified his
facility should greatly improve logistical support to existing SA-2 sites along the southwestern portion
of the Sino-Korean border (Figure 1 and Table 1).
7. Construction of concrete-lined storage buildings has been completed or is nearing completion
at nine of the SAM support facilities. No evidence of this type of storage building has been observed
at Pyongyang SAM Support Facility
Alternate SA-2 Sites
8. Eleven new alternate SA-2 sites,* consisting of three to six launch positions, have been
identified within 10 nm of occupied sites. The majority of these alternate sites are characterized
by partially revetted launch positions and an absence of an interconnecting road network. No SA-2
equipment has been observed at these sites (Figures 2, 6, and 7).
9. Sariwon SAM Site C1OA-2 the first hardened SA-2 site observed in North
Korea, was identified as to function in . The site is now in the final stages
of construction and consists of six tunnel-served revetted launch positions and an elevator-served
central guidance area (Figure 8). Possible rails, to facilitate movement of the launcher from the tunnels
to the launch positions, have recently been observed at each of the launch positions. Although vresently
considered an alternate site because of its proximity to Sariwon SAM Site C10-2
this site, when complete, will probably replace the current occupied site as the primary aci ity.
No further evidence of site hardening has been observed in North Korea.
*During the period February 1968 to February 1973, 29 alternate SA-2 sites were identified in North Korea; however,
all of these sites have either deteriorated, been overgrown, or been abandoned.
