WEST INFANTRY DIVISION
FIFTH ARMY GROUP
NORTH KOREA
1. This report locates and delineates the major army units subordinate to the West Infantry
Division, the reserve division of the North Korean Fifth Army Group. It is based on analysis of
photographic coverage from October 1972 through February 1974 and contains a location map, a
photograph, and a table.
2. The North Korean Fifth Army Group is responsible for the security of the central sector
of the Demilitarized Zone and commands five infantry divisions (one held in reserve) and a
medium-tank regiment. The major elements of a division are three infantry regiments, one artillery
regiment, one mortar regiment, one tank company, and a headquarters area.
3. This report is the fifth in a series1-4 on the Fifth Army Group and is designed to realign
the boundaries of the existing Basic Encyclopedia (BE) point targets into BE target areas. The
realignment of the BE boundaries has been coordinated with DIA and CIA analysts, and appropriate
BE action has been taken by DIA. In the future, the entire West Infantry Division will be reported
under the BE number now assigned to the headquarters area The area nomenclature
and boundaries have been arbitrarily assigned for reporting purposes.
4. Subsequent reports will follow, as time and manpower permit, on all divisions within the
Fifth and Second Army Groups. Supplemental reports will follow when significant changes are observed
within the reported areas.
5. The West Infantry Division (Figures 1 and 2), a reserve division subordinate to the Fifth
Army Group, occupies the west sector of the Fifth Army Group area of responsibility. The artillery
regiment of this division has been split and a battalion dispersed to each infantry regiment area.
A subordinate mortar regiment area and a tank company area could not be determined. The West
Infantry Division area is bounded on the west by the Imjin River at 38-21N 126-53E; on the east
at 38-30N 127-12E; and on the north at 38-35N 127-07E and 38-37N 126-54E. The adjacent defense
sectors are: to the west, the 2nd Army Group; to the south, the Southwest Infantry Division; and
to the east, the North Infantry Division. Table 1 lists the units of the West Infantry Division with
their geographic coordinates and associated BE numbers. The areas listed below are keyed to Figures
