WEST INFANTRY DIVISION
SECOND ARMY GROUP
NORTH KOREA
1. This report identifies and delineates the major army units subordinate to the West Infantry
Division of the Second Army Group, North Korea. The report is based on analysis of all photographic
coverage from October 1972 through December 1973 and contains a location map, a table, and
one photograph.
2. The North Korean Second Army Group is responsible for the security of the westernmost
sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and commands five infantry divisions and a medium tank
regiment. The major elements of an infantry division are three infantry regiments, an artillery regiment,
a mortar regiment, a tank company, and a headquarters area.
3. This report is the second of a series' on divisions within the Second Army Group and
is designed to realign the boundaries of the existing Basic Encyclopedia (BE) point targets into BE
target areas. The realignment of the BE boundaries has been coordinated with DIA and CIA analysts,
and appropriate BE action has been taken by DIA. In the future, the entire West Infantr Division
will be reported under the existing BE number now assigned to the headquarters area
The area nomenclature and boundaries have been arbitrarily assigned for reporting purposes.
4. Subsequent reports will follow, as time and manpower permit, on all divisions within the
Second Army Group. Supplemental reports will follow when significant changes are observed within
the reported areas.
The West Infantry Division (Figures 1 and 2), a subordinate and reserve division of the
Army Group, occupies the west sector of the Second Army Group area of responsibility.

The mortar regiment subordinate to the division is unidentified. The West Infantry Division area
is bounded to the east at 38-12N 126-39E, to the south at 38-O1N 126-31E, to the west at the
Yesong River and 38-15N 126-08E, and to the north at 38-25N 126-14E and 38-18N 126-41E. The
adjacent defense sectors are : to the north, the North Infantry Division; to the east, the East Infantry
Division and the Central Infantry Division; to the south, the South Infantry Division; and to the
west, the Fourth Corps. Table 1 lists the units within the West Infantry Division with their geographic
coordinates and associated BE numbers. The areas listed below are keyed to Figures 1 and 2 and
to Table 1.
Sokchon-ni Barracks Storage and Headquarters Infantry Division
6. This division headquarters area (area A) consists of one headquarters building, four
administration buildings, 17 barracks, three messhalls, numerous quarters and support buildings, and
an automatic-weapons firing range.
Sokchon-ni Headquarters Artillery Regiment and Barracks Area
7. This artillery regimental area (area B) consists of one headquarters building, five
administration buildings, 35 barracks, two messhalls (one O-shaped), and numerous quarters and
support buildings.
Hanpo-ri Training Area West-Northwest
8. This infantry regimental area (area C) consists of three administration buildings, 19 barracks,
14 barracks/quarters, four messhalls, six vehicle sheds, numerous support buildings, and a howitzer
battery with six tunnel-served artillery revetments.
Tokchong-gol Army Barracks Area Southeast
9. This infantry regimental area (area D) consists of one headquarters building, three
administration buildings, 19 barracks (five large C-shaped), four messhalls, one auditorium, 11 vehicle
sheds, and numerous quarters and support buildings.
Pyongsan Storage West
10. This infantry regimental area (area E) consists of one headquarters building, six
administration buildings, 43 barracks, four messhalls, 14 vehicle maintenance and storage buildings,
an underground vehicle storage facility with two tunnel entrances, and numerous storage/support
buildings.
11. This division has two separate tank companies (areas F1 and F2). Area F1 consists of
one administration building, eight barracks, one messhall, numerous support buildings, a tracked-vehicle
driver-training course, and four tunnel-served firing revetments with a reverse-slope tunnel entrance.
Area F2 consists of three barracks, one messhall, eight support buildings, a tracked-vehicle
driver-training course, and four tunnel-served firing revetments with a reverse-slope tunnel entrance.
