SOUTH INFANTRY DIVISION SECOND ARMY GROUP
NORTH KOREA
1. This report locates and delineates major army units subordinate to the South infantry
Division, Second Army Group, North Korea. The report is based on analysis of photographic coverage
from October 1972 to December 1973; it contains a location map, a table, and a photograph. The
purpose of this report is to combine point targets into area targets to provide more meaningful
reporting.
2. The North Korean Second Army Group is responsible for the security of the western sector
of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and commands five infantry divisions and a medium tank regiment.
Major units of an infantry division are three infantry regiments, an artillery regiment, a mortar
regiment, a tank battalion, and a headquarters.
3. This report is the fourth in a seriesl -3 on the Second Army Group and is designed to
realign the boundaries of existing Basic Encyclopedia (BE) point targets into BE target areas.
Realignment of the BE boundaries has been coordinated with DIA and CIA analysts and appropriate
BE action has been taken by DIA. In the future, the entire South Infantry Division will be reported
under the existing BE number now assigned to the headquarters The area nomenclature
and boundaries have been arbitrarily assigned for reporting purposes.
4. Subsequent reports will follow, as time and manpower permit, on all divisions in the Second
Army Group. Supplemental reports will follow when significant changes are observed within the
reported areas.
5. The South Infantry Division (Figures 1. and 2), a subordinate of the Second Army Group,
occupies the south sector of the Second Army Group area of responsibility. The South Infantry
Division area is bounded on the west by the Yesong River at 38-02N 126-24E, on the north at
38-02N 126-33E, on the east by the Demilitarized Zone, and on the south by the Han River at
37-53N 126-24E. Adjacent defense sectors are, to the west, the Fourth Corps; to the north, the
West Division; and to the east, the Central Division. Table 1 lists units in the South Infantry Division,
with their geographic coordinates and associated BE numbers. The areas listed below are keyed to
Figures 1 and 2.

6. This division headquarters (area A) contains one multistory headquarters building, seven
administration buildings, 12 barracks, 108 barracks/quarters, five messhalls, ten vehicle sheds, 60
storage/support buildings, and four tunnel entrances.
Kaesong Army Barracks and Regimental Headquarters
7. This infantry regimental area (area B) contains five administration buildings, 25 barracks,
five barracks/quarters, 55 quarters, three vehicle sheds, 47 storage/support buildings, six messhalls,
six buildings under construction, four concrete-lined, probable drive-through bunkers under
construction, an artillery battalion with two six-position, tunnel-served field gun batteries and a
six-position, tunnel-served howitzer battery.
Kaesong Headquarters Infantry Regiment and Army Barracks
8. This infantry regimental area (area C) contains five administration buildings, 28 barracks,
49 quarters, one auditorium, nine vehicle sheds, 15 storage/support buildings, nine messhalls, five
bunkered vehicle revetments/weapons positions, one six-position, tunnel-served field gun battery and
one four-position, tunnel-served field gun battery. The third artillery battalion organic to this regiment
was identified in the regimental area to the south (area D).

Taeryong-ni Training Area
9. This infantry regimental area (area D) contains nine administration buildings, 33 barracks,
150 quarters, 1.3 vehicle-storage sheds, eight messhalls, three four-position, tunnel-served howitzer
batteries and one four-position, tunnel-served field gun battery.
Kaesong Headquarters Artillery Regiment and Army Barracks Southeast
1.0. This artillery regiment area (area E) consists of one headquarters building, three
administration buildings, 1.4 barracks, 13 barracks/quarters, numerous quarters and support/storage
buildings, two field gun battalions consisting of six four-gun positions, and one howitzer battalion
consisting of three four-gun positions. Three of the howitzer battalions and one field gun battalion
area are under construction.
Taeryong-ni Military Area North
U. This mortar regiment area (area F) consists of three administration buildings, nine barracks,
four barracks/quarters, numerous quarters and support/storage buildings, extensive trenching
throughout the area, and numerous mortar positions.
Kaesong Army Barracks and Headquarters U/I Tank Battalion
12. This tank regiment area consists of two battalions (areas G1 and G2). Area G1 contains
one administration building, 13 barracks, 11 quarters, one vehicle shed, one messhall, numerous
support/storage buildings, and four weapons positions with a reverse-slope tunnel entrance. Area
G2 contains one administration building, 12 barracks, 18 quarters, four vehicle sheds, numerous
support/storage buildings, six artillery revetments, four four-position, tunnel-served artillery batteries,
and ten single-bay vehicle sheds'.
