NORTH INFANTRY DIVISION SECOND ARMY GROUP
NORTH KOREA
1. This report locates and delineates the major army units subordinate to the North Infantry
Division, Second Army Group, North Korea. The report is based on analysis of photographic coverage
from October 1972 through December 1973. The purpose of this report is to combine point targets
into area targets to provide more meaningful reporting. It contains a location map, a table, and
one photograph.
2. The North Korean Second Army Group is responsible for the security of the western sector
of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and commands five infantry divisions and a medium tank regiment.
The major units of an infantry division are three infantry regiments, an artillery regiment, a mortar
regiment, a tank company, and a headquarters area.
3. This report is the fifth and last of a seriesl-4 on divisions within the Second Army Group
and is designed to realign the boundaries of existing Basic Encyclopedia (BE) point targets into BE
target areas. Realignment of the BE boundaries has been coordinated with DIA and CIA analysts,
and appropriate BE action has been taken by DIA. In the future, the entire North Infantry Division
will be reported under the existing BE number now assigned to the headquarters area

5. The North Infantry Division (Figures 1 and 2), a subordinate of the Second Army Group,
occupies the northern sector of the Second Army Group area of responsibility. The North Infantry
Division area is bounded on the east by the Imjin River, on the south at 38-17N 126-52E, and
on the west at 38-25N 126-13E. The northern boundary is undefined. Adjacent defense sectors are:
to the east, the Fifth Army Group; to the south, the West and East Infantry Divisions; and to the
west and north, the Fourth Corps. Table 1 lists the units within the North Infantry Division with
their geographic coordinates and associated BE numbers. The areas listed. below are keyed to Table
1 and also to Figures 1 and 2.
Koksan Headquarters Infantry Division
6. This infantry division headquarters (area A) consists of one headquarters building, two
administration buildings, five barracks, nine barracks/quarters, one auditorium, two messhalls, six
vehicle storage sheds, and 23 storage/support buildings.
Kwangto Headquarters Infantry Regiment and Barracks
7. This infantry regimental area (area B) consists of one headquarters. building, 12
administration buildings, 36 barracks, 70 barracks/quarters, 129 quarters, four auditoriums, seven
messhalls, one vehicle-maintenance building, four vehicle sheds, and numerous storage/support
buildings.
Pyongsan Army Barracks and Storage Depot East
8. This infantry regimental area (area C) consists of nine administration buildings, 59 barracks,
72 barracks/quarters, 17 quarters, nine auditoriums, seven vehicle sheds, and numerous storage/support
buildings.

Chimgyo-ri Barracks and Training Area
9. This infantry regimental area (area D) consists of eight administration buildings, 79 barracks,
18 barracks/quarters, 135 quarters, two auditoriums, six messhalls, 11 vehicle sheds, and numerous
storage/support buildings.
Singye Barracks Area Northeast
10. This tank company area (area E) consists of one administration building, eight
barracks/quarters, one messhall, and two storage/support buildings.
Suan Military Area Northwest
11. This artillery regimental area (area F) consists of three administration buildings, 12 barracks,
63 barrack/quarters, 30 quarters, five auditoriums, two vehicle sheds, 16 storage/support buildings,
six standard artillery revetments, and four tunnel-served artillery revetments.
Chilchou-dong Army Barracks and Headquarters Mortar Regiment
12. This mortar regimental area (area G) consists of three administration buildings, 22 barracks,
15 barracks/quarters, 46 quarters, one auditorium, three messhalls, two vehicle sheds, numerous
storage/support buildings, extensive trenching throughout the area, and numerous mortar positions.
