This report contains information on aircraft revetment construction at ten transport/ utility airfields and a highway airstrip in North Korea. The information is derived from KEYHOLE photography obtained during May and June 1974. The report includes a location map, four photographs, and a table. 2. In continuing efforts to improve its air facilities, North Korea has recently begun a program of aircraft revetment construction and repair at over one-third of its transport/ utility airfields. Revetment construction has also been observed at one highway airstrip. This construction activity was first observed in May 1974. When completed, these newly constructed or refurbished revetments will significantly increase aircraft parking and storage capacity at these air facilities. V Transport /Utility Airfields 3. Revetment construction has been observed at ten of the 25 transport/ utility airfields in North Korea (Figure 1 and Table 1). Nine of these ten are in the southern portion of the country within 60 nautical miles (nm) of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). With the exception of Yongsang-ni, no aircraft have been observed at these airfields, and support facilities are extremely limited. However, all of the fields consist of either a serviceable sod or graded-earth runway capable of supporting light utility aircraft. 4. At least 71 newly constructed or refurbished aircraft revetments have been identified at these ten transport/ utility airfields. The majority of these earthen revetments are similar in size and configuration to those previously observed at transport/ utility airfields in North Korea. They are large enough to accommodate at least two COLT aircraft. ? 5. The distance from and accessibility to the runway of these recently constructed revetments vary. At Haeju Northeast (Figure 2) ten newly constructed revetments are near the runway and are connected by a dispersal taxiway. A dispersal taxiway is not yet evident at Hoeyang Southeast (Figure 3), where four revetments are under construction near the runway. At three of the ten airfields where revetment construction is in progress (Kumgang, Ichon, and Yongsang-ni) revetments are situated at least 1 nm from the runway. Yongsang-ni (Figure 4) is an operational COLT airfield with at least 11 new revetments currently under construction approximately 1 nm southeast of the runway. At least 27 aircraft revetments are now present at this field. Highway Airstrip 6. Revetment construction has been observed at only one of the 18 highway airstrips in North Korea. At Kojo Highway Airstrip, approximately 26 nm north of the DMZ, four revetments were seen in the early stage of construction near the runway (Figures 1 and 5 and Table 1). 7. With an increase of at least 75 aircraft revetments at ten transport/ utility airfields and one highway airstrip, the potential for future aircraft deployment to these airfields will be greater. However, runway improvement and support facility construction have not been observed at these air facilities.
