1. Antitank trainin was observed at 12 militar installations in the Shen- an Militar Re ion
Most of the training involved the use of earthen dummy tanks, which have been noted 25X1
previously in China. In six cases, however, tanks, mockup tanks, and derelict tanks were being
employed for training purposes, indicating that the Chinese are placing more emphasis on realistic
antitank training for troops in the Shen-yang Military Region. In addition, two of the installations
exhibited especially sophisticated facilities for such training.
2. One of these installations is the Chi-chi-ha-erh Headquarters Infantry Division Army Barracks
AL 1, where an antitank training area including various types of tank traps, obstacles, and antitank
training devices has been constructed (Figure 2). The devices include a probable type-59 tank sitting
on rails apparently for staging a controlled drive-over of troops in trenches.
3. Another installation with comparatively sophisticated tank training facilities is Chin-hsi Army
Barracks Northeast AL 1, where a small area designed for antitank training has also been constructed
(Figure 3). This training area contains three probable derelict tanks and a small mockup tank propelled
along a track by a winch system.
