This report discusses 17 of 20 high frequency communications facilities in the area around Kun-ming, China. The other three facilities were discussed in a previous NPIC report entitled Kun-ming Communications Complex. 2. This report describes each facility and includes a map, eight annotated photographs, and 13 tables which include all pertinent mensural data obtainable on the antennas at these facilities. 3. Of the 17 high frequency (HF) communications facilities described in this report, 13 are within a 12-nautical-mile (nm) radius of Kun-ming; three facilities are near the town of Cheng-chiang, 25 nm southeast of Kun-ming; and one is near An-ning, 15 nm southwest of Kun-ming (Figure 1). Although one of the facilities, Cheng-chiang HF Communications Facility 2, was described in a previous report,' it has been included in this report because of significant changes. 4. The 13 installations in the vicinity of Kun-ruing city are: Kun-ming Radio Communications (Radcom) Receiver Station Northwest (item 1, Figure 1) Kun-ming Radcom Transmitter Station Northwest (item 2) Kun-ming Radcom Station Northwest (item 3) Kun-ming Radcom Transmitter Station Southwest (item 4) Kun-ming Military Region Headquarters (item 5) Kun-ming Communications Facility (item 6) Kun-ming/Wu-chia-pa Possible Electronics Facility (item 7) Kun-ming Radcom Station Wu-chia-pa Airfield Southeast (item 8) Kun-ming Radcom Receiver Station Southeast (item 9) Kun-ming Radcom Transmitter Station Northeast (item 10) Kun-ming/Wu-chia-pa Airfield (item 11) Cheng-kung Transmitter Station North (item 12) Cheng-kung HF Communications Facility (item 13) The installations near the towns of Cheng-chiang and An-ning are: Cheng-chiang Radcom Station (item 14) Cheng-chiang HF Communications Facility 2 (item 15) Cheng-chiang Military Headquarters Area (item 16) An-ning HF Communications Facility (item 17) 5. The facility is 9 mn west-northwest of Kun-ming and consists of a fence-secured operations/ support area and an antenna field (Figure 2 and Table 1). The operations/ support area contains one multiwing control building, one administration building, five barracks, one probable messhall, a guardhouse, and three support buildings. The antenna field is south of the operations/ support area and contains seven rhombic, three quadrant, and five horizontal dipole antennas. It consists of an operations/support area and an antenna field. The wall-secured operations/support area contains one probable control building, one quarters, three housing or support buildings, and six support buildings. The antenna field is east of the operations/support area and contains one rhombic and 24 horizontal dipole antennas. The station is 3 nm northwest of Kun-ming and consists of a control area and possible support area. The control area consists of a fence-secured probable covered alit on the side of a steep hill. A possible support area is at the base of the hill beneath the alit and contains three multistory administration buildings, six possible quarters, and at least 19 support buildings. The antenna field (Table 3), containing four horizontal dipole antennas, is east of the control area and the possible support area. A branch from the trench seen at Kun-ming Radcom Transmitter Station Northwest was observed extending into this facility area in October 1972. The wall-secured control area contains a control building, one quarters, a messhall, and four support buildings. The antenna field is north of the facility and contains two rhombic, five quadrant, and four horizontal dipole antennas (Table 4). The operations/support area contains a wall-secured control building and an unsecured support building. The antenna field surrounds the operations/support area and contains three rhombic, 16 horizontal dipole, and two quadrant antennas. In March 1973 a probable cable trench (Figure 1) was observed extending into the control area. The operations/support area is wall secured and contains three probable control buildings, one multistory administration building, 16 barracks, six quarters, one messhall, 11 storage support buildings, and six vehicle storage buildings. One antenna field is just east of the operations/support area and contains four horizontal dipole antennas; a fifth dipole antenna was removed between December 1972 and March 1974. The second antenna field is within the western part of the operations/support area and contains six horizontal dipole antennas. These antennas were added between March and December 1972. Two FIX EIGHT HF/DF antennas are south of the operations/support area. The operations/support area contains two wall-secured control buildings, one quarters building, one messhall, two possible quarters, ten possible barracks, and one possible administration building. The antenna field is north of the control buildings and contains three rhombic, two quadrant, and three horizontal dipole antennas. The antenna field is southeast of the operations/support area and contains three rhombic antennas and one fislibone antenna. The antenna field, west of the operations/support area, now contains two rhombic and 11. horizontal dipole antennas. One rhombic antenna had been removed, one horizontal dipole antenna realigned, and two new masts added to the antenna field between January and April 1974. The two new masts may be part of a rhombic antenna under construction.
