KUN-MING HF COMMUNICATIONS FACILITIES, CHINA
1. This report discusses 17 of 20 high frequency communications facilities in the area around
Kun-ming, China. The other three facilities were discussed in a previous NPIC report entitled Kun-ming
Communications Complex.
2. This report describes each facility and includes a map, eight annotated photographs, and
13 tables which include all pertinent mensural data obtainable on the antennas at these facilities.
3. Of the 17 high frequency (HF) communications facilities described in this report, 13 are
within a 12-nautical-mile (nm) radius of Kun-ming; three facilities are near the town of Cheng-chiang,
25 nm southeast of Kun-ming; and one is near An-ning, 15 nm southwest of Kun-ming (Figure 1).
Although one of the facilities, Cheng-chiang HF Communications Facility 2, was described in a previous
report,' it has been included in this report because of significant changes.
4. The 13 installations in the vicinity of Kun-ruing city are:
Kun-ming Radio Communications (Radcom) Receiver Station Northwest (item 1, Figure
1)
Kun-ming Radcom Transmitter Station Northwest (item 2)

6. The facility is 9 mn west-northwest of Kun-ming and consists of a fence-secured
operations/ support area and an antenna field (Figure 2 and Table 1). The operations/ support area
contains one multiwing control building, one administration building, five barracks, one probable
messhall, a guardhouse, and three support buildings. The antenna field is south of the
operations/ support area and contains seven rhombic, three quadrant, and five horizontal dipole
antennas. Feedlines observed in most of the rhombic antennas indicate a transmitting capability.

7. The installation (Figure 3 and Table 2) is 3.5 nm northwest of Kun-ming. It consists of
an operations/support area and an antenna field. The wall-secured operations/support area contains
one probable control building, one quarters, three housing or support buildings, and six support
buildings. The antenna field is east of the operations/support area and contains one rhombic and
24 horizontal dipole antennas. In October 1972 a trench, possibly for a cable or pipeline, was observed
extending through the communications facility and terminating at the adjacent Kun-ming Maintenance
and Storage Area

8. The station is 3 nm northwest of Kun-ming and consists of a control area and possible
support area. The control area consists of a fence-secured probable covered alit on the side of a
steep hill. A possible support area is at the base of the hill beneath the alit and contains three
multistory administration buildings, six possible quarters, and at least 19 support buildings. The
antenna field (Table 3), containing four horizontal dipole antennas, is east of the control area and
the possible support area. A branch from the trench seen at Kun-ming Radcom Transmitter Station
Northwest was observed extending into this facility area in October 1972.

12. Four horizontal dipole antennas were observed at this facility in May 1971 and were later
removed. The facility's support area contains a possible control building, 20 quarters, and six support
buildings. A large square pad for a probable electronics tower is just north of the support area and
was first observed in March 1973. Two probable cable trenches enter the area from the south.
