Recen~ data for several air warning (AW) radar sites throughout the People's Republic of China have permitted the identification and mensuration of the RICE CUP radar antenna. 2. This report includes a map, annotated photographs, a perspective drawing, and mensuration of two antennas and their associated vans. 3. In late 1966, the radar was first identified~~ as a land-based height finder emitting signals from the People's Republic of China (PRC). In February 1969 the name RICE CUP was assigned.2 This designation was established in the electronic order of battle 4. The RICE CUP radar is a land-based height finder designed and produced by the PRC. In most cases, it has been collocated with the CROSS LEGS radar when seen at AW sites throughout the PRC. 5. The Lei-yang AW Radar Facility at 26-32-45N 112-34-25E (Figure 2) has a history of RICE CUP emissions. Reexamination of previous coverage reveals that this height finder has been present since at least anuar 1973. At that time it was reported as a ROCK CAKE/STONE CAKE radar. The reflector is positioned on a mount that extends horizontally from one end of a van. The antenna sail can rotate on the mount without requiring any rotation of the van (Figure 2). 6. The Shan-shan AW Radar Facility) at 42-52-55N 090-14-10E also has emitted the RICE CUP radar signal. Photography of March and July 1974 (Figure 3) revealed the The sail is positioned approximately in the same position as the one at Lei-yang. The radar van at Shan-shan is approximately the same size as the radar van at Lei-yang but without the ~ extension. However, at Shan-shan AW Radar Facility the radar van has been adjacent to a small support building on more than one occasion (Figure 3), which indicates that the van itself does not rotate. 7. Some other sites in the PRC with a correlation of photography and the RICE CUP radar signal are: Pang-fou Airfield AW Radar Facility at 32-54-30N 117-20-42E, the Hai-yuan AW Radar Facility at 21-52-52N 107-23-14E, the Ya-men-tun Airfield AW Radar Facility at 47-11-20N 123-49-OOE, and Yu-i-kuan AW Radar Facility at 21-58-30N 106-42-40E. -1- TO Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/14 :CIA-RDP78T05162A000400010061-0 of the RICE CUP and the CROSS LEGS radars. Other height finders designated by NPIC as TAN-TUNG A (mounted on the top Q of a van) and CHI-NAN A (mounted on a pole) may be the RICE CUP radar, but in a different configuration. There is also the possibility that the RICE CUP radar can be separated from the van and ground mounted on a rotating base.
