This report contains the disposition of Egyptian naval forces noted The naval order-of-battle and totals, provided in Tables 1 and 2, are composite data derived from photographic coverag~ All naval vessels are included except miscellaneous auxiliaries and service craft. Egyptian Naval Forces 2. The Egyptian Navy has a diversified fleet which includes destroyers, submarines, subchasers, several types of patrol boats, minesweepers, and landing craft (Table 1). The Mediterranean Fleet contains nearly 80 percent of these vessels with the remainder in the Red Sea. The Navy -consists of Soviet-made vessels with the exception of the old British HUNT-1 PF, BLACK SWAN PF, EMERGENCY DD and FAIRMILE PFs and the Egyptian-produced NISR PBs. OSA and KOMAR guided missile patrol boats, considered to be the most effective combatants, were Egypt's main naval participants in the October 1973 War with Israel. Deployment of Naval Forces 3. Naval vessels are deployed to a number of different ports in both the Mediterranean and Red Seas, but two-thirds of the total are at Al Iskandariyah (Alexandria), the country's main port and naval headquarters (Table 2 and Figure 1). A majority of the combatants in the Red Sea are at Bur Safajah Port Facilities, the Red Sea headquarters. 4. Guided missile and fire support patrol boats, among Egypt's most capable naval vessels, are deployed to virtually every major port in the country. The fire support patrol boats (PTFS) are former SHERSHEN and P-6 torpedo boats which have had their torpedo tubes removed and BM-21 rocket launchers added. 5. Although the Red Sea Fleet has been small and insufficiently maintained in the past, the opening of the Suez Canal is helping to rectify this situation. Several Egyptian combatants have already transmitted the canal, both strengthening the Red Sea Fleet and relieving some of the vessels which have been trapped there since 1967. The most significant additions have been two OSA PTFG and two SHERSHEN PTFS which have been deployed from Alexandria to Bur Safajah Port Facilities.
